Not sure what the ongoing expenses generally are like for a foodstuff business with human-delivery functionality, or if they may be net lowered by drones, in terms of soft and/or hard costs.

In principle the whole process can be automated and remotely supervised by the customer.

3D print the foodstuff, ship it via drone.

You can have machine vision enabled quality control. The printed foodstuff is only shipped if it looks enough like the ideal product, which should be manageable given the exact nature of additive manufacturing.

My son used to be a Deliveroo rider a couple of years ago - he’s a semi-pro bike rider and used it as training. One person couldn’t believe he was riding a bike and not a motorbike as he was so fast. Think that pissed off the other riders as it fucked up things for the other deliverers.

There was a guy that I used to work with and then we used to play squash together - but his main thing had always been cycling which he took extremely seriously, and he eventually said he no longer wanted to play squash cos it worked muscles in a different way to cycling and he thought that it was not conducive to improving at that. To be honest I doubt it worked any of his muscles that much cos he could beat me so easily... but yeah, he used to be a cycle courier in London at one point and he absolutely loved it; he too thought it was great practice and although I never actually saw him doing that job I am sure that he did it in the exact same way that he did everything else ie like an absolute fucking maniac competing in some kind of world championship final and with no regard for his own or anyone else's safety.
Somebody could make a good film about those people and the lives they live I think. Maybe just a good documentary could do the trick, I can imagine it as an intriguing subculture that is completely closed to me, and, I suppose, everyone else who isn't inside it.
There is this film sadly but I defy anyone to sit all the way through it to the end - it's one of those real bad ones, not just bad but really the sort of thing that can get right under your skin and hurt you, making you hate every person on screen and everything that happens, making you aware of your anger rising with every passing second until, eventually you turn it off and use the time that the rest of the film would have taken up more constructively by investigating every single person listed in the credits from the director to second grip and best boy, and then looking up all the other projects they have ever been involved in and then creating a list of things that you will never ever watch.

I totally get both of those examples, John: the people who are disabled or house-bound, and the occasional "party emergency". it's the young, healthy, able bodied folk who get lunch and dinner delivered almost daily who I don't get.
Convenience trumps most things for a lot of people.

Pedal ( 2001)

Documentary about bike messengers in New York at the start of the millennium, they come across like reckless freemasons, talking they are in a special secret society with a mutual aid program...

That's what I mean about totally closed, like if there is an underground dance music scene you can kinda join it if you like the music and meet the right people or whatever. But with the cycling you can only join by doing it, by being one of them, having not just the desire to join the cult but also the physical attributes and the total lifestyle I guess. Something purer in that respect than a load of old geezers collecting northern soul records I think.... not necessarily better in that I can't say it's a clique I would ever want to join, but a true secret world in some sense.

but why on earth would you want to live like that, the world of your last few comments? what kind of life is it, sitting isolated in a room, creating things remotely via your phone or computer, never meeting a person? never having a chat about the weather or basketball playoffs with the neighbor on your way to the store, never hearing a funny story from the store clerk, never running into an old friend on your stroll back from the store, never getting fresh air and a little exercise as you stroll? never stopping to smell the roses, literally or figuratively?

stunted life.

the world will consist of lots of people who have "saved time" and are all boring as hell, with little in the way of life experiences.

I place a higher premium on equanimity than I do on happiness, and I take that as an axiom to some pretty alien extremes. Experimentally, of course. Constantly being redefined.

I'm more interested in the frontiers of experiential reality, one of which is an increasingly purely informational state of existence.

i've only ordered deliveroo twice and both times where when i had a hangover. i felt really bad and guilty afterwards, having someone bring my food as if i'm some sort of prince.

I think new equivalences can be established in new worlds, which will in turn impose their cemented paradigms on even more alien frontiers.

That isn't to say, however, that any paradigm can't be appreciated on its terms, and in fact I do place a high premium on such flexibility, being able to reorientate a value system at a moments notice to maximally derive whatever can the derived from the current circumstances.

Such as, when I find myself subject to small talk, zooming out and attempting to resituate my perspective so as to better appreciate the experience on a more positive basis, all within the moments afforded mid-conversation.
