Street skateboarding is a weird Olympic sport. I spent a half hour earlier watching 15 year old Chinese kids repeatedly fall on their asses doing stair rail.
The thing with Olympics is that ninety percent of the events are total bullshit.
Yeah they should have the basic track events -100m, 200m etc even though the distances are fairly arbitrary they make sense well enough and the winners are genuine athletes who are the best at what they do. Distance throwing events I suppose I will allow, hurdles yeah... high jump and long jump sure but pole vaulting is dubious and triple jump is stupid, cross that out straight away. Walking races should obviously be got rid of.... in fact how did anyone even think of them in the first place? Some sort of joke between committee members that didn't get picked up on until too late maybe?
Swimming, fine, but you should only have free-style in each distance. Having 400m freestryle and 400m breast stroke is just pointless, that is the same as having 400m and 400m hopping race. Each race should be freestyle, you need to get to the end as fast as you can, if breast stroke is your best then fine, go for it, but the people you're racing pick their best style and if their front crawl is faster then tough titties.
Synchronised swimming is a complete joke. In fact synchronised anything should go. I am almost tempted to remove anything which needs a judge to decide who has won but I think I will allow the gymnastics as it is kinda hallowed by time.
In football the teams have to have players who are under 23... what the fuck? Why? That is already a joke, but then you are allowed some exceptions? It's just ludicrous. It's supposed to be "faster, higher, further" or something isn't it? Not faster higher further but under 23 apart for a few who aren't.... I just cannot believe that there can be anybody in the entire fucking world who thinks that make sense. Either have football or don't, but no bizarre fudges like that. To generalise that, based partly on the "reasoning" behind it, I think that there is a big question mark over all sports where the Olympics isn't the main international event for that sport... or at least one of the main ones. Like tennis for example, there are four tennis majors but the Olympics isn't one of them. A sprinter winning an olympic gold will say "This was my dream since I took up the sport" but a tennis player will say "Well, you know, it's a nice little bonus to win this" - olympics is supposed to mean more than that isn't it?
Horse dancing is shit it shouldn't exist at all, never mind in the Olympics.
They should really whittle down the yachting stuff obviously. Especially those ones where only four countries compete cos no other countries have any players, cos they have never heard of it. Stuff with stupidly high barriers to entry like that should all be got rid of - like we know Usain Bolt was the fastest man in the world, but is that guy who wins the obscure boat race thing truly the greatest? He's just the best of those who have tried it, but seeing as 99 percent of the world haven't had a go, it's a fair bet that if half of them got the chance to try it, somebody would be better than him, so is that guy really a worthy olympic medalist? No he is not.
And there are loads and loads more that should definitely be removed. And many more than that which probably ought to go, where there is a debate to be had at the very least. And I explain this every four years... and then it comes round again and I turn on the telly, and horse dancing still exists! Sometimes it really feels as though noone is listening.

my Facebook memory today was Lichenstein only having one tennis player for the 2012 Olympics, which begs the question - who does she practice with? The wall?

From the Guardian

I’m off to crack open a bottle of something special to celebrate that dressage medal.*

I shall hand you over to Simon Burnton. Bye for now.

*I’m not

I have to say I think that that is pretty pathetic, to poke fun at a heroic Olympian who has walked (ridden?) away with a medal after years of dedication and practice goes against everything the Olympics is supposed to stand for.

tennis walls were a consistent feature in France, tons of campsites and amenities had them, so pepole could rally alone to their heart’s content in the baking heat

(I’m never playing tennis fwiw)

The gymnastic event where they somersault between the high bar and the low bar and back again is really impressive, astonishing sometimes, to watch. They seem to do the impossible when they hurl themselves up from the bottom to the top.

The one where they dance and flip around on the big platform however occasionally has a horrible aura of backstage paedophilia around it because it's all 16 year old girls gyrating and thrusting suggestively.

Also, as per Lukas's comments earlier, but even more so, they're peaking at 16. The most impressive thing you've ever done at 16. I've not done anything impressive of course so it's probably better than nothing.

Lonely boy hitting a ball against the wall.... still pretty much the story of my life.

No but the ability to run faster than all the defenders and then do it can be. There are loads of skillful players, make one of then faster and stronger and you get Ronaldo.
I'm pro doping in football. Who wants 80s football back? It's even slower than womens football nowadays.

Today we did actually play, ninety minutes, 31 degrees, fucking brutal - especially with our "enthusiastic amateur" style of play. Did manage to film some clips the right way round too...

I dunno much about Eddie Merckx but I was impressed by his sportsmanlike and gracious response to Cavendish equalling his record number of stage wins the other day

I think that we can all agree that that kind of childish bitterness is what sport is really about.
Come on. Cavendish vs Merckx. It's just ridiculous. In a couple of years Cav will be another sprinter who is forgotten by everyone by the hardest cycling fan. And those sprinters who can't really do anything else (as in winning classics etc) should just stay on the track. He's just good on telly, like Cipollini was.

I could really bore you about cycling/Lance/doping etc forever but I’m guessing people have already seen/heard enough already but safe to say the story is so fucking sordid - the key with Lance is the sheer immensity of the bullying and viciousness he exercised is epic. Plus the biggest mistake he made was upsetting a Mennonite like Floyd Landis who has fucked Lance up so bad. He continues to do podcasts to rebuild his brand but he’s broke and persona non grata pretty much everywhere on the cycling scene whereas Big Mig has kept his mouth shut and is welcome everywhere. One example of the bullying - a bloke who had slagged Lance off was chased down from the breakaway by Lance to teach him a lesson. When he got back in the peloton the errant rider got a bolllocking from half of them for pissing Lance off. Like upsetting the school bully and everyone then suffering. Like I say I have more …
Yeah it's a good story. He really was a grade A jerk, which arguably made the whole show a bit more entertaining until it became too much. I booed at him when I saw him at his comeback Tour. I normally detest people who do that, but that was just too much for me.
