I vaguely remember Tommie Smith and John Carlos giving the black power salute when they got their medals, pretty mind blowing to watch as a little kid. Not as mind blowing as the ‘72 hostage taking and massacre, though. That was fucking mental, no pop songs during that one.

The old guy is Henry Dantor, a millionaire who brought the fairground a few years ago because he used to go to it as a child and wanted to return it to its former glory.

The thanks he got from the Vale of Glamorgan Council was a letter telling him he couldn't call his ferris wheel the Barry Eye.

there were only 3 channels then and no internet. and the olympics was on during the endless days of the summer holidays.
you would watch for hours. and Britain had its heroes, steve backley, linford christie, colin jackson and his perpetual understudy tony jarret, steve black, kelly holmes, kriss akabusi, johnathan edwards, sally gunnel, john regis
I'm old enough to remember Daley Thomson and his decathlon gold, and the Ocean game in his honour, part of which you had to waggle your joystick as fast as possible to finish.

so many niche freak sports on the olympics, who cares if you win a golden metal galloping a horse? there's only about 100 people on the entire world who participate in that sport.
