but this stuff was life and death in the 80s, one of my brothers friends was 'caught slipping', as they say, when riding his scooter and a car full of greasers ran into him and they all jumped out and kicked him to death... going to another town could end up like The Warriors, trying to run as fast as you could to the train station to avoid having your head kicked in by someone who liked a different kind of music to you..

I liked The Jam but hated the Style Council, obviously.

"Going Underground" was an proper ear worm when that came out. There is a deterioration when you get to Town Called Malice though:

I came back to this thread to say I'd been listening to The Jam's first 1977 demo, re-released and cleaned up on a boxset and enjoyed it (I Soulseek'd it for free, natch) and realised I totally missed this comment the first time round. "Saturday's Kids" has piss-poor lyrics - "Saturday's kids play one arm bandits/ They never win but that's not the point is it?" Well, yeah, it's the entire point of a fruit machine...nobody wanted to just look at lemons and bells while reflecting on how much their life sucks.

As for: "Saturday's girls work in Tesco and Woolworths / Wear cheap perfume cos its all they can afford /
Go to discos, they drink Babycham, talk to Jan, in bingo accents
"...what's a 'bingo accent'? Makes Garry Bushell sound like Malcolm McLaren. Fuck, it makes "Eastenders" sound like Malcom McLaren.

Anyway, The Jam mostly had shit lyrics. I like this though (wank shoes, btw):

bandz ahoy
Didn't realise the Jam/Weller made 80s rnb inflected music

I thought it was like the Ordinary Boys or something

I agree with luka's underlying thesis here that kids are cool and life is a tragedy

At Dingwalls in Camden
Reviewed at the time in Melody Maker - Jane Busman?
Caught my attention

to be fair that deep house night sounds alright.

80s camden was probably one of the first places to get onto house after Nottingham and the Midlands. North London has always been very housey. Hurp durp hacienda mancunian rubbish. shut up you were sobbing to racist Morressey, you lightweights. Although this (documented) set is from quite later. Shame no sets from Dungeons on Holloway road have surfaced though. Strictly acieed mentalizm! Or Prism at Camden palace, evil Eddie Richards, Colin Faver, Mark More, circa 1985-86. etc.

don't think i'll be listening to that set though, so don't ask me for my opinion on it. Kind of tired of the four to the floor rn.

but I think I roasted Luke Unabomber on twitter about this.
