the main thing i wanted to establish with this thread was the existence of a "schlubby middle aged white guys watching bad movies and saying funny stuff about them" continuum. mst3k (90s) > rifftrax (00s) > redlettermedia (10s). the midwest 'nuum.
That's apparently happening with some of those 'dirtbag left' podcasts too. They're floundering and just end up talking about films instead of politics.

the very obvious comparison for me with detroit/chicago is manchester/leeds. industrial and post-industrial, scenes that exist outside the capital, playing off one another.

I'd could replace "manchester/leeds" with Osaka / Nagoya and your sentence would still be correct
