I don't understand this, orthogonal to what?

Orthogonal to the notion of artist. The sampler and sampling as a whole is unethical in reference to the individual artist.

Of course thats why we find it so compelling, because it mirrors capitals mining of dead labour to dominate living labour. Think about jungle. a music nearly almost of made of detritus of the past in this strange, posthuman machinic way. But most of it's component ingredients are in a sense nothing but human.

Autotune requires artistic craft not technical craft.

Kit says he wrote that article and split the Pitchfork money with Si. We might have had a whole thread on that essay actually.

MR. FRIEDMAN: I think that issue is entirely orthogonal to the issue here because the Commonwealth is acknowledging –
CHIEF JUSTICE ROBERTS: I’m sorry. Entirely what?
MR. FRIEDMAN: Orthogonal. Right angle. Unrelated. Irrelevant.
CHIEF JUSTICE ROBERTS: Oh.
JUSTICE SCALIA: What was that adjective? I liked that.
MR. FRIEDMAN: Orthogonal.
CHIEF JUSTICE ROBERTS: Orthogonal.
MR. FRIEDMAN: Right, right.
JUSTICE SCALIA: Orthogonal, ooh.
(Laughter.)

I suspect this is an example of the legal version of a "micro-regional-dialect." With the micro-region being Hutchins Hall at the University of Michigan Law School. I encountered this word being used by at least a couple of professors when I was a law student there shortly before Friedman's arrival on campus. It was a commonly-enough used term in those days that it eventually entered my own active vocabulary - at least until I got out into the "real world" and the term was mockingly stricken from a first draft of one of the earliest briefs I tried to write. Professor Friedman, being a 20+ year inhabitant of Hutchins Hall, likely never realized until Justice Roberts whacked him between the eyes, just how seldom the world at large uses "orthogonal" in a legal context.

The visual difference between "tangential" and "orthogonal" is that that tangentail line slowly separates from the point of intersection, whereas an orthogonal line moves as quickly as possible from the point of intersection.

So to say somethings are tangentially related means that they are close to start with, but further apart as time goes on. Orthogonally related means that they aren't related at all.

I don't think we will TBH, its been around for 10 years or so, plenty of time for revolutionary developments but Cher still seems to be the basic template... if anything, its narrowing musical possibilities.

Any vocal FX which becomes widespread (see also the vocoder) results in the homogenisation of the voice... in dancehall for example, where vocal dexterity and diversity were once prime attractors, every 3rd tune now features indistinguishable auto-tuned vocals. I'd rather listen to Sizzla torturing his vocal chords with dodgy out of tune falsettos than the smooth, generic Busy signal version anyday...

Funny, thats almost exactly the point where Kit reckons Autotune started to come into its own, the beginning of the story, not the end, and I'm inclined to agree tbh.

What does orthogonal mean?

At right angles to. That's why I was surprised to see the phrase

Samplers are totally orthogonal because they involve spending (ejaculation)

Cos without a thing to which its orthogonal the phrase is incomplete.

Like here, it may be pretentious but at least I can follow the usage..

MR. FRIEDMAN: I think that issue is entirely orthogonal to the issue here because the Commonwealth is acknowledging –

At a right angle to autotune. They operate on different planes. samplers slam rods into tracks, ghosts of my life etc. autotune is part of the track as an artistic statement.

Does anyone know songs which has autotune chords? Not chord (be it group of singers or individual singer) autotuned in a single track, but every singer's note autotuned one at a time to make a chord.

Might have to D/L some autotune VST - I feel like experimenting.

Could just do this by pitch-shifting parts?
