read this on the train today (it was a long journey from the pennines back to the flat bit at the bottom of england)

glad that someone is fighting back against the 'nothing new has happened since jungle' thing, because it's always felt a bit obvious to me that it's not right. i feel vindicated. also nice to have someone else praising new developments in hip hop.

made me want to investigate more dancehall which is nice.

bit concerned that luka is famous

i've dipped in and out of dancehall over the past decade, which is basically the period that the book covers, and always liked the overall sound. there is a bit of a barrier though because it is pretty vocal-oriented and i normally can't make out half the words, let alone understand what they're actually on about. although thanks to the book i at least know why they keep going on about gaza

listened to a bit of vybz kartal and a bit of alkaline over the past few days, off the strength of the book. i've never heard music which is less well suited to listening to in a village in southern england in the middle of winter, if i'm totally honest

What I remember really loving about the book (and this is a painfully obvious point, natch) was its refusal to genuflect before the past and its dogged insistence that NOW IS THE TIME.

Because isn't that a much cheerier notion than nothing new under the sun (which rises having no alternative)?

The only thing about it that's not very cheery is that all the new music is dedicated to murder and ultraviolence
