The importance of "bad" music/art

makes me think a bit of grime actually. i remember when i was evangelical about it playing it to some other people into hip hop who thought it was amateur AF. but then other people totally got it, outside of its amateur aspects. amateurism as rebellion/resistance of existing aesthetic ideals and expectations. and then a new set of aesthetic ideals within that amateurism.

It's possible to become such a connoisseur that you loop back round and start to appreciate the dross.

It's also easy to become a "connoisseur" by learning what the other connoisseurs think is good and looking for that.

Oh what a tangled web

This is why I'm wary of technical language and keep focusing on the way people pick up certain terms from Twitter. This stuff can be a costume.

you start out being motivated by the good the true the beautiful, the transcendent sublime experience of pure song but become more and more interested in the material residue, the actual sordid facts. things, grubby, horrible things

Nah I mean prog house is actually big amongst white settlers in Latin American countries, India etc. In that regard it trumps any nuum music, sad to say. It's just unspeakably middle of the road. Hard house is equally as formulaic and functional but it still has that transexual biker turned methhead gay club vibe.

And again to be fair to Muggs the stuff he likes is early Guerilla, JBO etc, 92-94, which is basically semi-credible now thanks in part due to djs like Ciel, Roza Terenzi etc, as well as a load of boring as fuck RA blokes reminiscing. So in that sense he's been on the pulse. It's just that stuff sounds well below US house standards, and much below 93 darkside standards. It just does, no two ways about it.

TBF I do have a derrick May set from '92 where he's playing a prog tune. well, I did before my hd crashed. So even the detroit gods aren't immune to the counter-revolutionary brain deadening expectations of middle class clubbers.
