I can even see it happening in a utopian scenario. It does seem inevitable, to me, that the possibilities of a purely virtual existence are sublime. But it does seem like our instincts lead us to associate a primarily virtual existence with a dystopian material world, which I don't think is necessarily true.

There's a bit of that but also a lot of it is probably tied in with films and these marvel things being massive etc, films like insterstellar, that Dark series on netflix. there's loads of new media with it in. i reckon there are even daily mail online articles about parallel universes now

used to be that sci-fi stuff was a real niche and tbh the comic book stuff was lampooned as in the simpsons- oh you read Marvel you must have size 42 kecks and back acne bet you've never even touched a girl's bum

but secret dark spiderman parallel universe (i don't watch them sorry for poor reference) is mainstream now isn't it

everything is marginal gains there is never one big clear answer

You're probably right there is always a desire to immerse yourself into a different existence. But i do also think that the less appealing the outside world is the more likely you are to enter into the virtual/inner

it doesn't have to be dystopia- some people like the sleaze and underbelly

this i would say has only come about once the technoigical foundations for virtual life started to come about though. traditionally leaving the body behind has been thought of as the ultimate good.
