yeah i posted it in the computer art thread. it's good when all the threads become one big thread though. we've noticed that before. it means there's something happening.

why not? also it's not quite fully machine art. it's based upon text prompts and also image prompts, and you can also get it to work towards an image. so there's loads of human intervention.

you can't have profound machine art by definition
Well I can pick different words to be semantically cleaner, but to me this kind of prompt-based GAN art is avant-garde in a more substantive way than any other contemporary art I’m aware of.

yeah i agree with that, part of the reason i really like it is cos it's a route out of abstraction. i like stuff to o with accident and non-intention on part of the artist and these things don't do what you want them to do which makes the resultant art interesting

Yeah I mean if modernism was about the freedom granted by seeing through the orthodoxy and traditional values, and postmodernism is about seeing through such freedom, it would seem that further progress would require an inflection point that is orthogonal to the metanarrative somehow, and this kind of GAN art is a sort of fetal alien poiesis that is paradoxically entirely human-made, ostensibly ambivalent about the metanarrative.

And it also calls into question, to me at least, how our perceptive hardwiring boils down to lines drawn in the sand about where to visually distinguish one object from another, and what words to ascribe to what objects.

Photons of distinct wavelengths being discerned and cognitively distinguished on a basis of striations and boundaries.

I see in GANs an artificial approximation of our own sensory-cognitive apprehension of the world.

A relatively crude one at this stage, but one that is entirely programmable by human will, which does not exercise such determination over its own hardware.

I like the videos cos you see a bit of the process.

and especially the ones where there's a switch. It's like it's had 2nd thoughts

But right now I'm trying to curb the immense creativity going on, by doing composites. Not working yet

I mean machine art has been a thing since Giuseppe Pinot-Gallizio, if not earlier, but I think GANs may introduce a sort of machine impressionism that would have seemed, as far as I know, technically infeasibly beforehand.
