one of bartys most astute opinions is that cans drummer is nothing special and can as a band dont have a single good tune

I mean it's kind of true, at least, relative to other rock drummers, Liebezeit is no Elvin Jones or Rashied Ali. But it's that absolute systematisation of the nothing special rock backbeat which makes his drumming compelling.

Rock bands are not tight enough as a whole. You should check Yoshida Tatsuya. He brings that Jones/Ali school of drumming into a noise context. Particularly his musica transonic work.

i know what a chord progression is, but i don't know what a melodic progression is, unless it's a series of melodies one after the other, in other words, a melody

oh yeah i remember they did that with the South African world Cup aswell
What was that programme about them preparing for the Olympics in London? It was gentle but it was quite funny and one of the kind of running jokes was about two departments called Legacy and, I forget the other one, but it was a word meaning essentially the same thing and they were always trying to claim territory from each other by claiming such and such was a heritage issue not a legacy one or vice versa, long before the thing itself happened.
I guess that the pre-emptive legacy thing is now well established and mocked.

Its something you hear in modal music, which the west avoids.

It's like grandad at the wedding who has run out of cigarettes and tries to sing a song and you're like, oh, god, please, make it stop, even if we are going to be struck down with thunder and lightning, please for the love of all things holy stop. Because you can never criticise them. Oasis is a bit like that. Primal postmodern kitsch elevated to seismic proportions. Noone can criticise an oasis fan without looking like an absolute scrugelike cunt.
What? People cunt Oasis off all the time. And their fans. You're thinking of Paul McCartney perhaps, it's the answer to one of those Trivial Pursuit questions

Q - What crimes still theoretically carry the sentence of capital punishment in the UK?

A - Arson in her majesty's shipyard and saying something mildly insulting about Sir Paul

Neither can occur though, the former because her maj no longer has any shipyards, the latter cos it is physically impossible for the mouth of any true born English man or woman to form a negative phrase about Sir Paul. In fact, as I write this, I begin to question why he is only Sir?

Remenber Heather Mills McCartney, the tabloids and basically everyone in fact, hated her, but she was completely protected by the McCartney force-field while they were married. I remember they circled like sharks and Sir Paul was a raft keeping her safe or... well whatever metaphor you like, but they were longing for his protection to fail and the second it did they gleefully piled on, it was awful to see.

Oh, you can cunt off Oasis fans. You'll just be called a working class hater, even though Oasis is fundamentally a bourgeois project. Its idealisation does not reference present proletarian music, or even the music mostly listened to by proletarians in the 60s.

all Im finding on 'melodic progressions' is the intervals inside the equal temperament octave, which is quintessentially western

They have some moments after Future Days, but yeah - diminishing returns. The crapness of the albums are in proportion to how cringe the pun titles are: Saw Delight; Rite Time...
Can you clear this up for me... is Saw Delight supposed to be like a Jamaican saying "I saw the light"? I had always assumed that but when I just casually mentioned it one time to a load of record collectors they all turned on me... was it cos they were unwilling to accept Can beings so crass or was there some basis in fact? Some claimed to have never even noticed the pun.

Third I will wire you 100 dollars right now if you just admit the term 'melodic progressions' is something you made up

Nope.

4. Turkish Makams: By joining tetrachords and pentachords, complete scales and modes are created. There are thousands of musical examples of works written using hundreds of different makams in the literature of Turkish classical music. Makam names vary according to pitches used as well as general direction of the melodic flow. Thus makams are really rules of composition and not just scales.

I relistened to all of Saw Delight and reaffirmed my original position. Call me is probably the only song I would skip. The reaction against it is probably due to it being a bit kitsch- disco rhythms and melodies, arabian nights and other world influences, easy listening- and that not jiving with the mythos of one of the canonical Cool Rock Bands.
I think that album is not too bad either... but maybe if you're supposed to be an all-time great band, then not too bad is shotting on yourself.
One time I DJ-d for Damo Suzuki and I was paid, wait for it, I was paid eleven pounds. The most insulting sum I have ever been paid for anything, I mean how did they arrive at that precise number?
Edit: I realise that makes it look like DS was paying me and was really tight, but someone else was paying us both. I imagine It has the reason I got so little was cos DS got it all... or possibly I was just really shit

It's like raga. They are not merely scales, but indicate a way in which a melody has to go and has to be played, hence the leeway given to improvisation.
