shitting on their own legend

For me the worst are bands who split up before you were born and who exist as myths or even legends from another time, a dimension you never entered and never could have. And then they reform and it's just some fat guys with guitars.

(I suppose you can't blame artists for carrying on - what are they supposed to do with the rest of their lives?)
derrick may did well to maintain a career for 30 years without shitting on his legend by releasing any music. everything he put his name to still stands up and still even has a certain mystique, and yet he's also never disappeared. that old music seems separate from the man at this point

There seem to be quite a few who fit into another category of, however hard they try - somehow don't seem to sully their legacy (despite mediocre album after mediocre album)

Prince, Bowie etc
they had long enough runs of initial greatness (not in my eyes necessarily but how they're perceived) that they can withstand the mediocrity that came after, which just gets washed away from the public memory over time.

they would never play some late 90s bowie song on a radio tribute show to him because no one even knows those songs and there's too many old ones to play

As to that, it's hard to name many classic dnb producers at all who've come back successfully once they've dropped off. When they've gone to crap, it seems they've usually gone for good.

Errmm...

Krust
Blame (judging from his recent releases)

Can't think of any others.
Digital has just kept on quietly releasing workmanlike tunes that do the job and the occasional dubby extravaganza that I love.

Big Black’s legacy seems safe because there was a plan to split up at a certain point.

Also Albini’s income is from engineering I think? (Music).

People like Kevin Drumm have huge discographies but what they do is so specific it’s quite hard to fuck it up I guess.

it helps that as maxi says no one listens to the dross so for example everyone on dissensus loves oasis based on the first two classic albums and as we havent heard any of the other stuff it doesnt lower them in our collective estimation

That's a good way of putting it and speaks to wider point - all these artists getting frustrated that their improved technical skills are leading to diminishing results
There's a hyperdub radio show from a few years ago where kode9 has got terror danjah on and they are talking about his old tunes vs new ones... And steve tells him straight he thinks he's a better producer now, but loves his old tunes a lot more. Terror danjah speechless.

I think it’s ok if people carry on but use different names.

The Lemon Kittens - 2 albums
Fad Gadget - 4 albums

All great. Lots of other stuff of variable quality by the same people. But those slots on the shelves are solid.
