that all sounds alot like diy spots over here- the reclaimed building, the multipurpose rooms, the 'association' aspect- but they dont last very long. this is more common over there?
I dunno, certainty ZDB has been here for a long time... however I've known people who work there and say that doesn't really live up to its remit and the "association" thing is basically a dodge. I get the feeling that this is often the case... though if the result is that bars of a kind that couldn't otherwise survive I guess it's fine by me.
But yeah Cosmos is just another bar very much of a type. A superior one for sure with risk-taking programming and run with luck. But far from unique.

I'm sure I would. it's so sad that places like that are so rare nowadays. NYC largely sucks, some business techno/house clubs and then a few small DIY places that last a couple of months. no regular place for weird electronic stuff.

i've been a bit surprised at this since moving here. i always assumed that i just didn't know the right people.

But this is why ilm is the enemy. ILM is a pleasure prison. Routinised. Music as safety valve. All they want is a good night out. We don't.

We want to let the bad times role. If the newbies can't handle that, then tough shit, they can go there and spend the rest of their forum life debating with sad oxford junkies who read Will Self.

OK fine but lay off on the personal insults and make the critique substantive to what people are actually saying. Is all I'm saying.

We all like to watch a car crash argument in real time but once people start name calling and someone gets offended, the fun stops

I can't stop people from being offended. and I'll only be polite to those who deserve it, this isn't some enforced hierarchy. You hyperbolised that whole meating shtick didn't you?

Anyway, I'm not even sure why I'm arguing my case here. Some people (not you) will only be happy once I've gone from the forum or play a different role on here (I.E: not be my blunt self.) So they can try. It only takes a click to ban me, y'know.

I'm sure there are places in Brooklyn/Queens that I don't know about, but nothing on the scale of The White Hotel mentioned by catalog. Maybe Knockdown Center, but they also book house DJ nights (Larry Heard. Honey Dijon, Horsemeat Disco). Issue Project Room is more high-brow artsy, none of the smoke machine/lights/dirty noisy electronic stuff that seems to be prevalent at TWH.

I was wondering about how bars are in NYC cos today, after about five minutes in Cosmos, one of Suspender's (really, particularly nice - so much so I feel it has to be stated for the record) friends said "There are no places like this in NY" which really amazed me, even as an exaggeration, cos although it is a very cool place, I just wouldn't have thought of Cosmos as in any way unique.
Perhaps he was just being overly polite, I guess that's what nice people do, or at least so I've heard.

lots of it has to do with real estate, just too expensive here to have the space. there are practically no clubs in Manhattan anymore (aside from corporate venues like Bowery Ballroom, Sony Hall), cost prohibitive. There are places out in industrial sections of Brooklyn/Queens, but nothing like TWH.
