She did donate a kidney, despite it all. That is a tremendous thing to do. Saves human lives she doesn't know personally. Few are so good

she would be arrested in the UK - it's illegal here to offer a kidney to a stranger

there was a cult, the "jesus christians", who made it a point of trying to game the system in the UK by pretending to be friends with someone so they could "selflessly" donate a kidney and signal to the world what a great thing the cult was doing

I'm sure it is illegal here because we don't like braggarts, hence my immediate distrust and dislike of "dawn"

of course now I've just checked, they've changed the law since the "jesus christians" were trying to give away kidneys to all and sundry

so, it used to be illegal but now that I've proclaimed that it is, "they" have made it legal...

I was going off this out-of-date info

Donating kidneys to strangers is illegal in the UK. When I called the Department of Health (DoH) to ask why, they said, "You mean, strangers selling kidneys?"

"No. Just giving them away."

There was a silence: "Giving them away?"

"Yes."

"You mean, when the donor is dead?"

"No, alive."

"We'll get back to you," they said. They did, with a prepared statement: "Ultra [the Unrelated Live Transplant Regulatory Authority] insists on confirmation of an emotional relationship between a donor and a recipient." The DoH's view, they explained over the phone, is that anyone who wants to donate a kidney to a stranger must be in it for money. If they're not, they must have psychiatric problems, and so need to be protected from themselves. No one would go through such a traumatic, invasive operation for sane, altruistic reasons. When I met Ultra's chairman, Sir Roddy McSween, he said he was sympathetic to altruistic donors in general, but added that the law's the law, and any infringement would result in three months in prison and a £2,000 fine.

something else about the meta-stories is about how the protagonists circle one another on the internet, probing and collating and researching across the wide spctrum, sizing one another up remotely before engaging

it''s very internetty,
also reminds me of another nyt/wp story about an academic who lost their job because of anonymous harassment accusations, they got embroiled, had to move state, as they gradually worked out the facts - another tale with the victim/perp flips, identity anxt, futile appeals to authority - officialdom unable to handle this new relationship reality, all eggshells all the way
