The romanticism of a fake world; play acting experiences no longer possible. Heartless pastiche. Isolation in one of the worlds largest cities. Its very zeitgeisty
Yes! And it wasn’t made as pastiche! They were serious - so yeah exactly this, thanks for the right words - LaLa Land the same, Atomic Blonde etc… & not only isolation in LA but isolation in fake, shallow yet no connection with that isolation even… Very zeitgeisty like a rhizome of LA l, like digital film technology itself: these things alone do not quantify it as “good”, it’s meta repetition like throwaway non durable plastic… He is like a west side d***head playing at East Los or white boy Proud Boy.

nowhere have I claimed this or implied it
OK, so you do agree with me that regardless of what one personally thinks of the film, most people do recognise that - rightly or not - the name of the film is used as a shorthand for a mark of quality. Even someone such as you who doesn't like the film could still make use of this fact if need be and describe something as for eg the Citizen Kane of bunny rabbits and be confident that they would understand that it was a fucking good rabbit.

No, I can’t commit to that, sorry, but do agree that the film has in the past been used as a measure 📏 by many extolling the virtues of that type of thing. Can’t say more without re watching. What do you think is great about it?

theres a pivotal scene where albert brooks character talks about making cheap action films, 'sexy stuff,' in the 80's before it pittled out and I thought that was a pretty clear indication of the films intentions. Regardless I dont think intention means much though. arguably its better if its all accidental

I didnt even think of these things until this conversation. I thought it was a good movie for 'traditional' reasons- story, vibe, entertainment and etc.

i have actually worked on one of the terrible films mentioned in this thread but i'm not going to say which one. it was a hellish experience though and convinced me to get out of that industry once and for all
one of the things I’ve noticed working in film production which might be interesting but also predictable if you think about it is that the average producer, editor, even director, (not DoP tho), has veritably worse taste in films than the average member of a board like dissensus. What they do know is the craft and the language that you need to coordinate stuff in an editing room so that things get put together according to a visions but that vision as an aesthetic whole is not really guaranteed to be any better than what any of us could come up with. Maybe we do all know this at some level but sometimes it’s easy to forget, while sometimes you get the big reminder.

Nah sorry - I reckon that’s try-hard meta referencing postmodern films like those we discussed earlier yesterday… very fact 80s ones are mentioned may point to badness (as in not good) of this movie! Afterall the 80s had a slew of bad noirs right?

I dont think I follow. if its try hard post modern meta referencing how can it not be intentional pastiche?

Because it might be how like younger people I know from work revere the 80s: wasn’t it good back when rather than pastiche, since this film is like that age group. You don’t think this is subtly different from regular (earlier) postmodernism? I do.

I don’t like these words like postmodernism. It’s fine that they’re in the mix but can we keep them below the surface please, I’m sure luma the custodian concurs

I just posted a thought that was in my head
Sorry I was being dumb, re read.
Yes guess so, and the trick is to get enough money to do both: through having worked on enough junk, without injury, with luck, a massive will, popularity, a green card, all the best connections and 2+ years of savings to start with be able to implement this path

Sounds difficult. Are you a filmmaker?
