Universally agreed terrible film(s)

And as Rich points out, irony has rescued films that most people would regard as absolutely awful e.g. Plan 9.

When I think about the worst films I've ever seen, I immediately think of the American Pie sequels/spin-offs 'The Naked Mile' and ... I can't even remember the name of the other one. 'Beta House'?

I'd be amazed if there are more than a handful of people who've seen those and thought they weren't totally awful.

I suspect that really bad comedies (granting that humour is subjective, etc.) are the most irredeemable because it's hard to find them even 'unintentionally' funny, as you can with terrible action movies like Commando e.g.

You could probably add any Adam Sandler film then, but he's made loads so some people must presumably enjoy them.

Happy gilmore is a five star classic one of the best comedies ever made. Right up there with dumb and dumber

Ive got one that everyones heard of and everyone knows is shit, and not a cult film: Catwoman with halle berry

also was gonna say Batman & robin but i saw it in the cinema aged 5 and loved it. And I think some people do have some fondness for those campy schumacher batmans now

Do we include "straight to video" / "straight to DVD" / "straight to streaming" or whatever the current term for films that don't get a theatrical release are called?
I think not cos such films are probably not famous enough to be at everyone's fingertips for this purpose.

what are our criteria for being "terrible"?

There are plenty of technically competent but excruciatingly boring films like "Lincoln" - a film that fails to remotely entertain, set during a civil war but featuring no battle scenes, just one dull speech after another for hours and hours..
Not sure that matters here does it?
In that im not sure we have agreed the criteria for good either but Citizen Kane still functions as a short hand for it.

I suppose Shallow Hal and the Sex & The City film are two abortions nobody’s going to reappraise ‘til Hell freezes over. (ETA not Shallow Hal, the Paris Hilton one where she has a fat mate)
Sex and the City has a built-in complication in that if you mention it people will say "the film or the TV series?'

Triumph Of The Will hasn’t fared well over the years either.
Really? I saw it at the ICA a few years back.

The Conan sequel with Grace Jones which sounds like it would be really good but it isn't. There's a MMA film too where the MMA rivals meet in the car park of a nightclub and one stud says to other, the gay clubs that way. I have to look that up find out what it's called.
Sounds intriguing and the dialogue is already near legendary, but if you need to look it up, it can't be the answer to my question... which is proving harder to definitively pin down than I anticipated

I've just done a search for "citizen kane of bad movies" on google and the top answer was "The Room" - awful film, one of the worst ever that I have turned off midway through, but doesn't count because there is a cult following ( I can't laugh at it, feels cruel to do so, as "not all disabilities are visible" )

Commando is not terrible so I'm taking back that thumbs up actually.
Actually you're right, I was just going off the top of my head.

It's got it's own sense of irony as I now recall – him carrying that log over his shoulder, playing with his daughter, the incredibly OTT murder puns.

The live-action Ghost in the Shell is surely down there. Even setting aside the casting of Scarlett Johansson, it's just such a terrible film by any standard - or at least it was for the 30 minutes I saw before I had to turn it off.

New World universally derided except for Gus and Gus only pretends to like it as part of his performance art
It's the nearest yet in that...

a) It's obvious deck
b) It's pretty well known
c) It's never gonna have an army of superfsns that dress up as Pocahontas and learn her dance moves

Uh-oh this is gonna be awkward if I have to go and meet our man Gus having just had a small part in having his favourite film officially declared as a marker of a "seal of absolutely no quality whatsoever". Please guys think of something worse....

Mmm

I've not seen it but I thought it was loved by some critics, voted on best of the century lists even and stuff like that.

I attempted to watch Wonderwoman 1984 the other day, for some reason. Turned it off halfway through. Nonsensical plot, hammy acting, stupid SFX. I've never been a devotee of the superhero genre, but this was just dreadful.

Gal Gadot is very nice to look at, but that by itself couldn't save it.
