oh yeah and i also watched eli roth's first two films last night which were both good. cabin fever obviously paying tribute to Evil Dead quick reference to the Last House on the Left music in there too. The Evil Dead trope of the incredibly all-American youngsters in this case killed off in a cabin in the woods. Hostel uses this same innocent Americans abroad thing to an almost absurd degree. It seems I saw the alternate ending, curious now about the sequel

I worry about her though - she played a groomed teenage girl in Cape fear as well.

Similar thing with Jodie foster in taxi driver
She is amazing. That Cape Fear scene wow. But yeah Scientology and the Licks. Wish she had stayed an actor

I rewatched that one fairly recently and had forgotten about that horrendous scene where James Gandolfini beats up Patricia Arquette in the motel.
Patricia Arquette! ♥️
(sorry people keep mentioning love interests)
So much misogyny but Tarantino always slips that in. There was. Jim Jarmusch (spelling?) film - the famous one where they go to the beach, misogynistic also but not violent but people lived it, 80s tho

i've been doing "research" watching all the tarantino and affiliated stuff recently. i thought NBK had aged really badly personally all that canned-laughter family psychosis seems really heavy handed, didn't think Woody H's performance was up to the role really or maybe he just annoys me.

Four Rooms was unwatchable, turned it off

True Romance holds up better in a very 90's almost 80's way, plot defined by a big packet of cocaine, better than Jackie Brown in that way although JB was very watchable for a long film.

Deathproof was a lot better sillier and kitschier and less annoying from than what I remembered.

Sin City was good that holds up alright, better than Kill Bill was lays the references and clichés on a bit thick

The novelisation of once upon a time in hollywood is about 10 times better than the boring film. Over the course of the book you get a MUCH better idea of why QT finds this material fascinating

tHREAD DERAIL - Research continues
Love Brad Pitt on the roof scene in Once Upon A Time in Hollywood! So perfectly to-be-looked-at in the Laura Mulvey sense … And how can you knock all the 16mm westerns parts? Take another look? Some people find 0 to be redeemed in Tarantino though. I know.

Cabin fever is wicked, I remember that one. No desire to see hostel though, isnt it a bit like Saw and that sort of torture porn stuff?

no i like him, which is why i'm doing all this digging. for me inglourious basterds and django unchained are by far his best work by FAR!

i feel like i'm opening a can of worms here but the beating up women scenes would be misogynistic if they portrayed a man beating up a woman and left you with a sense that ooh yeah that's a cool guy. but i've always come away feeling fuck those male characters, even if "anti-heroes", are a piece of shit and the woman is probably fucked up too. i don't think the films we're discussing glorify anything

Yeah, it's horrible. It's about an underground organisation who abduct people so that rich men can pay to torture them. There's a lot of people being tied to chairs and having various tools used on them.
it's about 2/3 of the way through the film before this kicks in though. the earlier part is all set-up and some of it is a bit like the hangover Not only is it torture pornographic but the Serbian government also offered the director an all-expenses-paid tour of serbia so as to prove it's not like a horror film

I think Tarantino’s expression is often misogynistic plus look at the loose seat in the Carmen Gia (spelling appalling sorry!)! from Kill Bill which Uma briefly spoke about with the metoo. However I doubt he is any more misogynistic than any other older gen X with a foot fetish - but he did beat up can’t remember her name in Hateful 8 way too much it was awful. Plus he posted image on FB fan page last other day looked like gang rape but didn’t really stop to look so could be wrong.
I don’t like Django or Basturds, got bored

I loved it, it reminded me of what cinema can do. But I saw it first time at cinema with popcorn and all the trimmings
