All the NCSI CSI GCSE franchises, infinitely terrible, you can paint anything on this guff

Most narratives are detective formats these days, add a family for some emotion, partnerships, corruption, tits

part of the role is the detective as worker outer of the scheme, solver of the case, the brains that lay out the story for us

but then they should also be a catalyst in the events, an accelerant, flushing out the culprit, forcing their hand

ideally the detective is playing the situation, the only one who sees all the cards, maybe they are being manipulated but they narrowly scraping through,

probably the detective has already laid out maguffins to create a surprise trap for the final confrontation and revealing - an unassailable proof
>if it wasnt for you meddling snoops!

it's an eschatology for the 20thC, as @HannahB mentioned: apocalyse derives from "unmasking" / revelation

Dr Who reminds me of Mr Benn, taking on different identities through space/time portholes, working out plot plays in a psychedelic haze

It maps onto human inquiry, archaeology is often narrated as a detective story just with shit jumpers

When your kids go through the "why?" phase, precision answers on how are always sought, all fun bluffs caught

Ellroy overthought the whole thing in particular directions, but i think sees himself as a continuation of this heritage trail
he goes in for this chopped out language that is kind of like the succinctness of a gritty hardbioiled gumshoe but can come over affected
also i think he over enjoys the fascistic hyperviolence :( Frank Millar also. as i was saying upthread it's' close to "real life crime" stories experience
doesnt ellroy bump off the detective character in one book and go alng with with the cops instead?

Ellroy created that style cos he was over his word count and refused to simplify the plot - so instead he cut out every inessential word... and people liked it so he kept doing it.
