I heard this song yesterday and I liked it. Is an alias for Jan Schulte and I don't normally like his stuff but cos i liked this one I thought that maybe the stuff under this name would be good. So I listened to every track he made under that name and I hated every single one of them except this one.

Reminds me of some of the psychedelic trip hop that was coming out of California in the early/mid 90s, Tranquility Base, Single Cell Orchestra, early Crystal Method. Mid-tempo, trippy, with occasional acid squiggles.

Just sold a copy of the "pay to cum" single for a pretty penny (not this much, but pretty good).

runs to Bad Brains records in attic scanning frantically ’this is the new bitcoin, actual relic assets’. nah, how each record finds you is as good a tale as how you might think you found it, until Discogs pulled more central databases together with provenance of stock, uneven demand creating Frankenstein price instances

admit to buying regularly up until Covid but went a bit ott since last summer, more than a few hadn’t been heard or identified for aeons, or not had access to digitally entirely, lost on a tape somewhere or all of the above. in the same way it’s good karma to give certain cd’s/records/books away, the magic continues

The postal problems here have really slowed my buying. I know ordering stuff online hardly has the same magic as using a scrawled map to penetrate deep into the swamps surrounding New Orleans* and locate a legendary warehouse - the record collecting equivalent of the Aztec City of Gold - abandoned so long it is now completely overgrown and home to alligators, snakes and feral diggers who will happily kill to get their hands on any unknown northern stompers (as long as they are vgplus or better obviously) desperately sifting through box after box, aware that anything you don't find and rescue right now will be destroyed forever by the approaching tsunami, or taking tea with the granddaughter of the bassist of some legendary psych band whose only private-pressed album is spoken of in hushed tones by the most obsessive collectors - after tracking her down via an investigation that Sam Spade would admire - in her living room while she regales you with unrepeatable anecdotes of drug-fuelled sex and rock n roll mayhem before finally confirming once and for all that the legendary lost single does exist by the simple expedient of producing from the loft a box containing 150 completely mint copies.

Or whatever else; the point is, buying online is not as cool as all that sort of stuff, but I still really like it. It's great fun to leap from one thing to another and explore an enormous number of sounds and connections. If you're like me you will hear something and be "I've got to have that, I've just got to" and you can't wait until payday, so you're phoning your mates going "Come on DannyL just buy us this record mate, I'll pay you back on Fri" and eventually you'll persuade them (maybe not if it really is DannyL, he'll more likely go "Oh I dunno, you still owe me 10p cos pints were more expensive in that second pub and I bought more in there") and then you think you might as well see what else they've done and the first you thing you check is even better so then you're phoning someone else to buy that for you when you think "Hang on, I'd better be a bit systematic here" and have a proper look through the back catalogue and by now you're realising that he's got tons of killer stuff and the ones you bought to start with are the worst - but that doesn't matter by now cos you've discovered he was briefly in a band in the eighties which was produced by Martin Hammett and you've got to hear that...

Point is there were times when I would just order so much that I couldn't remember what I'd ordered and what had come and what should have come and so on. And also I often couldn't afford to pay bills or eat or stuff around that period, but it was exciting when packages would pile up at your house and you couldn't remember what they were so it was almost like getting presents form someone. Also, inevitably, the one you bought for two quid on a whim would turn up the next day perfectly packaged, but the super rare on that you had been after for years and spent more than you could justify (a little white lie to the girlfriend was required every now and again) would take months and months to show. Every day I would phone home and ask Louise (that was her name) if I had any packages and she got increasingly annoyed, I had to beg her to open them and play them to check on the condition or make sure that the whole record was as ace as the ten second snippet I'd heard and which hard lured me into paying a hundred pounds that I didn't have for it - ultimately she claimed it was taking so much time out of her day. I said how long does it take to open a record and she said some of them are so tightly packed up it takes fucking ages, and also there are so many of them.... at one point she put a limit on it, and she would only open one per day so I'd be trying to guess which one was most likely to be the one I was dying to get my hands on and I'd be going "What the fuck? I don't even remember buying any ten inch ones" and so on. And she had a really savage temper, massive arguments down the phone.. and, well, the point is, the excitement og ordering anything kinda dissipates when you realise that there is a fifty-percent chance that anything you buy will simply never show, you will wasting more money

*If such things exist, I've no idea really.

@IdleRich you will appreciate this one.

I never spend a lot on records (I mean, I occasionally pay retail for a new record or cd, but not collector's prices), but the one time I did, it never showed up. bought on discogs in march, didn't arrive in 2-3 weeks so sent the seller a message, no response. waited a few days, sent another message, no response. a few more, no response. and this guy has hundreds of items on sale and has thousands of sales.

eventually, after about three months, he finally responds and says his father is in hospice and he's been taking care of him, etc. says something was wrong with the address and the shipment was returned to him and he hadn't had a chance to resend it but will tomorrow. I feel bad and say "oh man, sorry to hear about your situation, no worries, no rush, whenever you can."

so of course, another month goes by, no package. I start with the messages again, no response. finally, five months after the initial order, I send him a message saying "seems like the best thing to do is cancel the order, don't worry about it". I disputed the charge with PayPal, they immediately refunded the amount while they looked into it with the seller. A day or two later, PayPal tells me the issue has been resolved and the credit stands.

so after five months, I still didn't have the record but at least I got my money back. and then the seller messages me and says "please don't leave negative feedback, since it was resolved amicably", which is a joke because the only reason it was resolved is because I got tired of waiting and filed a dispute with PayPal.

so I go to his discogs seller page, and his overall rating is in the 90s but for the last year, he's gotten a number of negative reviews, the most common being "placed order, never arrived, messaged seller numerous time, never responds"...exactly what happened to me. one even says "Ludicrously bad seller. This can't be put down to incompetence, to be this bad it must be malicious. No record delivered, doesn't respond to any messages, lies about item being sent and returned back to him!".

but I can't decide if the guy really has been overwhelmed with his sick father or if he's just become a scammy motherfucker. I like to think the best of people.

You never know do you. There's been a huge thing with the company that manages my London flat. At one point they said they had cash flow issues and they couldn't pass on the rent for three months. Then with me they paid it eventually but it turns out with lots of people they didn't, and some of them have several flats and they are owed like 30k. And then it turned out the rent was being paid via a subsidiary company which has declared bankruptcy with everyone's money (nor mine luckily). But the guy who runs it couldn't be contacted cos he was in hospital almost dying from covid... then he got better but his wife is in a hospice cos of cancer....

@Leo @IdleRich

there's one seller on eBay & discogs who always seems to have records I want, but past experience has taught me that I don't need them that much as I will have to wait months and months and read various excuses about "shielding", health issues, hospital visits, and the like. The records have always arrived, eventually, but given the precarious state of their health I can foresee the day when they croak with my money in their bank account, and because of that I just ignore their listings, no matter how much I need a particular record...

I’ve heard some scammy sellers will list records they don’t have, and once you buy it from them, they go looking for it at a cheaper price than what they charged you. And that’s why it takes so long to get it.

Seems like a stressful way to make a few bucks.

I can almost see making an excuse every now and then, but it’s pretty low to use “my father’s in hospice”, jfc.

that hadn't occurred to me, but does make sense in a twisted sort of way

There are so many scams. I heard one, this guy I know realised people would buy a super rare record from him, when they got it they would complain about condition and send it back... except he realised they would swap it for a worse copy. The difference in value between vgplus and m- could be hundreds... now he marks his records invisibly to stop this.

Yeah this is a classic one when the prices are very high for something, that means they are basically taking a commission to find it for you - without telling you that or you agreeing to it.
