i haven't forgotten this @catalog i'm just not sure what to give you but yknow what sod it:

not so keen on the first one - i never heard it before though. i like it when all the english rappers use english-isms but it also gets a bit boring. good torvill and dean reference though. one thing i did think with this that the combo of the very bright big beat and the tight close ups on the video made it look a bit more convincingly american. the very end 10 secs as well, when a new tune comes in, liked that one.

2nd one really good - dancehall feel. not heard it before. i was a bit thrown cos i thought this couple was a british selection or something but this is nyc right?

lol nah both are British i don't know how you missed this considering how you talked about watching MTV Base in uni cause these 2 were on at the time.

The vidoes do try to look like American videos but they always looked just that little too bright and too cheap even at the time for me granted compared to what you was getting on Channel U this was high end shit but still

Million Dan's from Tottenham he was with the Demon Boys back in the 80s, Bigz is if i remember right is down with "Eurogang" who were SAS's crew(terrible rappers) you might remember them cause they were running with Dipset for a while until Juelz Santana and J.R. Writer got kidnapped by Tana and South London man

@catalog you mean to tell me you of all people didn't appreciate Bigz making a refference to Matthew Pincent?

also the beat is a blatant jack of the Clipse's grindin but its not a terrible one

i like geto boys, i bought the album 'til death do us part' years ago. think i got it cos it was namechecked somewhere in connection with schoolly d who is one of my favourites.

this one on that album i really love, the relentlessness of it and variety of crew voices.

there's an almost black comedy / very over the top feel to geto boys, with the controlled and slow, deliberate flows plus the sound FX and samples, you can enjoy it on a slightly different level if that makes sense.

you sort of know what you're gonna get with them, they've found something to do and they do it well.

mr hyde i never heard of before, i prefer the melody of the geto boys one. this one's a bit more menacing, but also a bit more monotonous.

i also don't think the rapping is quite as good... it's a bit newer sounding?

i like both of these, prefer the first one.
going back to this i'm surprised you like the Geto Boys considering you've stated your aversion to more "aggressive" music

Yes like I said there's a comedy thing going on. Cartoonist or comic book, over the top. I would liken them to someone like trim who is very aggressive but mainly a piss taker.

E-40 is a name I recognise but that's about it. Sort of a trendy one at a certain time? I like the west coast feel of this one, got that nice bendy instrumentation going on.

Yeah, like it. Very natural and rhythmic, effortless feel. Drawling. They're all having a nice old time.

2nd one... Much icier feel, don't mind it. Not sure it works well as a structure, with the little break in the middle, but the 2nd half is very strong. I like that very low voice. Extremely fast but crystal clear.

Actually really like both of these.

I feel like you must be reffering to this track which was part of the then popular "hyphy" sound which despite being one of the more well known songs from that period it actually came out quite late

@catalog also E-40 has been rapping since the mid 80s and has had more radio hits as a 44 year old man than when he was in his 20s that and is responsible for a large number of slang used in rap

also i gotta say RIP Young Dolph didn't like him as much as some people but definitly a good rapper and Key Glock isn't a slouch either i like Glock's ear for beats

Hyphy never really got trendy but it was a paradigmatic and early example of blog rap, Detroit is the new figurehead for blog rap. Music with a regional appeal that fails to go mainstream but instead gets championed by a small online audience.

i can agree with you on hyphy but Detroit? with the response to Babyface Ray's album that came out not too long ago nah if anything Detroit's taken over the spot that Atlanta had last decade as much as that might hurt some peoples feelings in here

the fact that he had Pusha T, G Herbo and Yung Lean for god knows what reason says alot i'm not saying FACE is a perfect album there's defo some playlist filler on there but the good stuff is really good

I'm not saying it's good or bad, it's just a thing. A place bloggers and their readers end up.
