Catalog, one thing I've noticed in this thread is that you don't really talk about lyrics or the rap itself. To me, that's one of the most important components and being a rap fan is in part about deep involvement on this level. There is that dichotomy between rap lyric and rap as sound but still - it seems missing from your analysis. Is this accurate? Fair? Thoughts?
Yeah that is a totally fair critique of my critiques so far. I've really only listened to these once or twice each, and understanding the lyrics will take a lot more listens.

Maybe that is one of the issues with hip hop nowadays. As in, no one (I mean me) has the attention span to give a song its full due in terms of actually listening?

The words are so complex, so hard to hear, hard to parse, that music without words wins out? Or where the words are clearer?

And running concurrent, a bigger more coherent beat just takes over? The hook becomes very important.

If we take Kanye as an example, you can get most of the whole song, including some of the lyrics, off a first listen. The songs then reveal themselves to be very basic and of a type, so you do also get bored easily after a few listens.

I did pick up a few lyrics on the 2nd listen, but I never got the full drift in any of these songs really.

its not just what the words say either but tis how they're structured like i often say that between them freestyle fellowship and organized konfusion basically rapped in every way its possible to rap... mapped out the entire possibility tree.

I think it would help immensely if I could go round someone's house and get quite stoned while all these were played on a good system. I will put them into a mix when webesc is done, that will help.

I mean i'd beg to differ with Kanye but then again i've always found him to be an average rapper at best

also you say this but i know people who can't have issue getting through instrumental songs or even if the diction of the rappers words are clear

some guys rap like they have no lower jaw and its no problem to get through 5 tracks of theirs back to back, i mean that's both the dig and the praise that some people give to rappers like playboi carti and them is that their tunes are more about the hook being repeated 20 times and the verse is really short

yes it would youre absolutely right. theres no point listening to music as an adult if youre not intoxicated in some way becasue you simply wont hear a thing.

Definitely I could do with a better method than listening off YouTube on my phone if I wanna hear the words and comment on them.

That freestyle fellowship one in particular has a lot of different ambient sounds in it.

not that i really want to talk about Kanye, catalog but if you're telling me you "got" something like new slaves or blame game off of your first listen alone you're lying

I've not heard either of those songs, not knowingly. I am thinking of something like Ultralight beam or real friends.

I don't really listen to hip hop at all, especially contemporary hip hop. I've got a few old favourites that I return to a lot, but I really couldn't tell you much about what's going on now with it. I would never claim to. I did make a concerted effort to get into young thug a while ago.
