if you want to know why i come off so negative on the man it stems from me never really being a fan even though i acknowledge his talents and having to deal with more than ever people wanting to discuss him in exaserbated sweaty hyperbolic tones. Ranging from lads who mostly listen to classic rock and didn't start listening to rap until they were 28 to man who deem him "the only good billionaire and the only free man in western capitalism" i was done before but i am so DONE done now.

Also i acknowledge that this isn't a new critique but alot of his ideas and creations just come off as the big budget version of stuff that guys were doing in the underground its just that cause he does it he's a futuristic genius and the guys who did it before hand cause they don't have any big name co-sign they may aswell be the equivalent of the guys down Camden outside the Jazz Cafe trying to hawk you their albums.

real friends i get you but imo with that track is basically a Blu(l.a. rapper) song, i like that beat though
The strange thing is, I don't like it anymore, actually cannot listen to it at all, find it very annoying. That seems to be the case with all of Kanye. I get one or two tunes which are an ear worm and I cane them a bit, then I suddenly go off them and it basically prevent me from going any deeper into him

last point: i heard one track off of Donda and it was the one with Fivio Foreign and Carti on it, my man does not sound good over drill beats

some people are like that but it tends to happen more so with singles rather than album cuts

Yeah I totally understand this and agree with you broadly. I think it is really his profile that is everything, the music is secondary. You get wrapped up in who he is.

I shouldn't have brought him up really. I'm just struggling for reference points really.

that's why this whole thing is beneficial for you it'll widen your reference points outside of a couple cherry picks

There was a time where even as his profile and antics were going on the sentence some people would utter with him is "i'm not interested in his antics i only care about his music" it just seems unthinkable now

Just going back to that thing about attention spans, I left hip hop a long time ago as something I sought out, followed, got into deep.

And it is hard to get back into it in any meaningful way perhaps, for all the reasons Danny mentioned a few pages ago.

So in a culture of first listening predominating, generally, I will just not pick up the nuances that you guys can.

its not just what the words say either but tis how they're structured like i often say that between them freestyle fellowship and organized konfusion basically rapped in every way its possible to rap... mapped out the entire possibility tree.

yeah, it's the rhythmic interplay, lyrics as melody.

I find it hard to listen to rap without headphones so I've probably listened to less in the pandemic, as I wasn't going anywhere. Headphones let me focus, hear, rewind etc. It's hard to listen to rap in the family home, in part because of all the cussing and celebration of murder, but also because I literally get interrupted every five seconds by fighting children. Re. relistening - to me It's one of the things that gives rap so much richness, it's like poetry being infinitely re-readable - I know there's plenty of records I'd describe as "favourite albums" which have bars that have totally passed me by up and maybe I'll get to discover them someday.

I fucking love it though, when you hear a bar or ad lib that kills, it's just great - it's that sweet spot between stand up, musicality, sheer arrogance social commentary and so much else .

I would say though it's easy to listen than ever to my mind - there's so much out there so easily accessible, and then resources like Genius make it so easy to pick things apart.
First example I thought of was Gucci saying "you'll never get Old Yellah back" on Lemonade. That made me crack up so much.
But here's another:

A rising tide lift all boats, oh, you don't got a boat?
Niggas betta learn to swim to quote Save Yourself they won't throw a rope
Water at your chest, lies in your throat

Just body neoliberal economics in a bar and keep moving on with watery metaphors.
(Billy Woods - Long Grass)

ribbing on what I said last night, Dean Blunt is proof of Miles Davis contention that rhythm is something you have to practice and that it is learned, not innate, east London's disproof of orientalism, right there! The guy has no flow whatsoever.

i'm sure @catalog has something to say about this i haven't listened to much blunt compared to either of you but i agree that to call what he has a "flow" is kinda laughable

indie culture is formed in reaction to demanding middle class parents. its a rejection of effort and ideals of competence/perfection etc
its supposed to be rubbish. i personally hate it, but i understand it as a professional anthropologist.
