Yeah I think this area is perhaps where the frothiness is best exhibited. Middle aged venture capitalists investing millions or tens of millions of dollars into projects that generalize into a promising technology, but in particular don't amount to anything especially interesting or paradigm-shifting.

Sandbox/Decentraland/etc are first-movers in the blockchain metaverse, in a way that I don't think confers the major advantage. And they aren't even nearly the first movers in terms of virtual reality games / MMOs, just first insofar as these games are built on blockchains.

I personally don't get the sense that killer metaverse app (be it a game or something between game and work) has been conceived yet.

Yeah web3's distinctions are mainly under the hood, but on the surface the big distinctions will be about verifiable ownership of digital assets, which isn't an established feature of web2, aside from maybe some fringe cases.
Well really the big feature is decentralized databases, but as far as most internet users are concerned thats an invisible feature.

web3.0 is just another crypto grift isnt it, ultimately serving to rationalise the absurd valuations needed in order for those currently invested to exit with a profit

Crypto is the loudest aspect of web3, but most of the really innovative stuff will likely prove to be less appealing in mainstream terms. It's just a new way of thinking about databases, and it can't be overemphasized how much of a frontier it is, i.e. it hasn't been thoroughly charted yet.
