This is worth a read from someone who has been in this field longer than anyone else.

The Democrat talking points slotted into this are really jarring. You get some interesting context for the metaverse idea and its history then he starts waffling about Russia and disinformation and anti-vaxxers.

it all sounds cool with great potential. it's also sad to think of people spending even more time sitting like bumps on a log in front of their computers.
Yeah the sedentary aspect may be the worst part, seeing as kinetic activity would seem vital to good health.

I don't see Zuckerberg's future catching on. At least not at the level of saturation he wants.

Kids already have virtual worlds they inhabit, they are called Call of Duty, Fifa & Animal Crossing.

No twee, safe space full of tacky avatars is going to take over that world of addiction and entertainment.
Yeah I would be surprised if Facebook is relevant in fifteen years.

And you are right about the video game immersive worlds. Some of these games already have full-on economies and cultures, albeit immanently.

What does it do to your eyes too. A lot of people already have dry eyes from screen usage. I can't imagine sitting around in a headset for hours and with no natural light is going to be much better.

How can you have something that borders on all encompassing and avoid Control’s command prompts?

Lockdown reminded anyone who needed it that real life analogue meta beats screen time. Tough sell

Will I need a usb port in my forehead? Is there malware in the new metaverse because how do you firewall consciousness? What’s with the questions?

This is American dystopianism, you enter through a menu page while a 2 minute anthem to Mark Zuckerberg plays. There’s a shrine of course, since the alleged assassination. The one we’re not allowed to talk about. The next big hit. Will the sea be warm? You could tap into the British market with warm seas, huge potential

The latest VR headset, oculus quest 2, its not sedentary. You draw a guardian circle around yourself which is like your safe area. If you breach it, all the lights come on and you can see normal reality. And the good VR experiences use the 360 nature.

The headsets are a pain that's true. Lots of people complaining of headaches and dizzy spells.

Yeah this is the radical thing at the heart of blockchain, that a system of collective governance, which becomes financially infeasible for single party to censor to dictate, can be built and maintained, with the only changes to the system being the ones that the majority agrees upon.

That's for playing games specifically designed to have you moving though. The metaverse is supposed to be for all sorts of things, like sitting around having office meetings.

Yeah I'm not sure about that, sounds pretty scary. Like zoom but you have to be fully immersed, there's no hiding? Could be painful.

But for people, like those slightly younger than I am, who may be more used to / comfortable with socializing via avatars, this new status quo may be preferable.

There are loads of cool VR games, have you played astro bot it's fucking amazing

But the "metaverse" isnt that is it, its Roblox or Minecraft or Habbo Hotel if we're going back a bit

To that subsection this is going to be great but they're not mainstream society in my opinion, it's a niche outside the mainstream

Yeah in a way these niche gamer communities are already well acquainted with much of what will be novel about the metaverse to many people.

Haven't heard of astro bot though. Kinda reminds me of the game Phoenix was playing in Her.

I dont think theyre "gamer" communities - roblox etc are more the socially awkward kids who like k-pop and have to inhabit virtual worlds instead of the real ones

Certainly seems that way from my own family who use it anyway, maybe its different in america

Yeah I do think the socially awkward could have a major edge with all this. They've already kicked their feet up, staked their claim, etc.

I think a very simple signature of all this is that more people are spending most of their waking hours on screens.

Think I've misunderstood the metaverse in that case, but are there not similar things to roblox etc in VR? I wouldn't know, not touched mine in months.
