So why do they need tokens? The excuse on the AI generative stuff is the heavy computing power required.

Token is just a term that has stuck more than it deserves to. It just refers to a piece of data which represents some object, whether that object is financial asset, a piece of media, or a document. It's also the atomic unit of the state of the database: the state of the database is the current allocation of all tokens of all types across all accounts - but the term token has a financial connotation that I think has overstayed its welcome.

Yeah and that business model makes some degree of sense, as far as I know - assuming they're even using blockchain. You haven't had to create a web3 wallet to use the GANs have you?

No but I think it could be going that way cos Dall e has now said you can make nfts and all that. Someone's gotta get paid somewhere along the line I suppose.

a friend of mine's ( millennial ) daughter bought those metaverse goggles and sent them back after a week, which leads me to think "who is this aimed at?"

like, it seems no-one is interested

Yeah this metaverse push really had gaming-centric take, without much real use beyond that. There are virtual conferencing apps, plus AR construction assistance tech, which I think may develop out into more useful applications.

But the bigger trend which I think the term 'metaverse' really ought to describe is the increasing percentage of our lives spent online and in virtual environments.

my friend's millennial daughter is a "gamer" ( COD champion, etc., ) so if she packs up the goggles and ships them back, then who is this "metaverse" going to appeal to?

Even gaming-wise, I don't think the leading examples of VR metaverses are that interesting. They still seem kinda primitive to me.
