there was a period when every hiphop event you went to in London you would just hear the same 12 records all night,
just a best of 1994 selection what always included OC Times Up. they were all great records but it started to do your nut in after a bit.

Yeah on a similar thing I'm coming to the conclusion that all London amapiano sets are pretty much identical. They're great (they are! THEY ARE!) but the DJs only play about 5 tunes

Idk, I'd defend some of this. the background muzak aspect was a quality in itself.

Yeah, andy weatheralls hypercity for force trax still holds up. The stuff I was referring to as neolib minimal was the stuff that came later, Gazer, Dubfire, m-nus, all that shit. Just dire dire stuff, white noise plinky plonk we used to call it.

was the decade where you had a big increase in amateurs, both in terms of ability (grime, etc, all those soundcloud rappers, or was that a very 2010s thing?, something like dubstep sounded a bit too pro in some ways, but then i was just listening to too much grime), but also audio recording. rise of ppl recording at home, not knowing what they were doing, not caring, or people recording in a studio and still sounding like they were at home (grime again, the libertines). i think someone here talked about how a lot of modern songs sound 2D compared to 3D 90s songs, and i think thats true. a lot of modern production sounds thin and dimensionless. all just part n parcel of digital defaults i suppose but something about nor many people caring to make it better unless youre adele or whoever.

Disagree, modern production sounds too quantised, too perfect. 2d would be good, today we have 4d, which is a bit of a curse, it's all spread out, not enough muscular oompf and swing.

I sometimes think I should quantise my peruvian chicha or turkish psych for my mixes in reaper and lord knows it'll snap to the grid much better, but it almost feels like I'm going against everything I believe in.

Yep it is getting to be this way. It's a weird one because all the UK dubs come out on bandcamp almost straight away and everyone has just downloaded the big SA ones from the bomaza/fakaza etc sites

Not many dubs or exclusives, seems like that bit is missing from it

It had had made it's way into the states enough by 2004 where you could pick CDs by people like Dizzee Rascal and Wiley in chain stores.
