one good thing about the vaccine not being 100% effective is that the coronavirus thing will go on in one way or another for the rest of my life. that means that in 40 years i'll be able to come onto dissensus, into this thread, and watch mr tea and mr biscuits continuing this discussion. they'll be old pals by then, still disagreeing, but with misty-eyed nostalgia for their arguments from decades ago

this thread is possible the most revealing and entertaining rolling history of corona that exists, marking all the different phases and conspiracy theories. pure historical gold.

guardian article today on ONS data saying covid infections are at an all-time high in England, that seems nuts. all-time high? what's going on over there?

The government decided that the pandemic's over, everything's back to normal, there's no need for any restrictions, testing, self-isolation, masks, working from home etc any more, but they forgot to tell the virus so now fucking everyone's got it.

The good news is that it doesn't actually seem to be killing people in comparably large numbers at this stage, but it's a bit of a fucker if you're trying to plan your life / run a business / etc.

Exactly. As I said yesterday, some feared the restrictions would remain once the pandemic was over, but instead the pandemic has remained while restrictions are over.

a mate had a “cardiac event” recently from working in A&E without a serious break during this entire fuckstorm. worked through every wave, 4 infections and the last omicron dosing finally caught up with him

diagnosis - acute, unchecked ptsd and now heart muscle damage too, so a strapping ex-marine who could smash a half marathon and still do complex maths currently resembles a furrow-browed, frail old man

dunno lads, how fucked does the nhs have to get for the public (how can I put this delicately) to interject? a previous 6 hour wait in A&E is now 12-18hours minimum and even then mistakes rising, opticians and dentistry gets pricey enough (and yes, we’re beyond lucky to have anything) - not a protest with fuckin placards, much much more a complete downing of all tools until a restructuring and recruitment plan is addressed, formulated and implemented

get it that’s not even the first letter of the first word of the first paragraph of an actual workable manifesto (or pledge to one) and yes Covid has compounded entrenched problems, but who else will provide solutions answers beyond the pvt sector given our current admin? a long-term, ideologically driven Tory ambition to privatise chunks of the nhs is finally reaching critical mass with big pharma peering back, as any working opposition with bite has evaporated

shit week, venting

I'm wondering this re: food, energy costs etc. too. Apparently we're looking at an over 100% increase in energy bills by the end of the year and a lot of people are struggling as it is.

Assuming that the reduction of vaccine effectiveness with repeat doses is actually a thing and not just proof by blatant assertion, that's an argument for not just giving everyone boosters every year from birth. Fine. There still comes a point where the value of getting a booster rather than getting infected again becomes worth it, even if it means the protection you get next year is going to roll off slightly as a result.
But then the vax become negatively effective after time t, worse than being unvaxxed - that's why boosters... But then the same problem crops up again three months down the line

Some academics said, "Are you dumb, don't vaccinate during high prevalence cos it will just create super strains" and look what's happened...Now we've got a variant that you can catch if you're both listening to the same radio station.

One day biscuits we are going to meet face to face, and I'm finally going to get to the bottom of whether or not you really believe all of this or if you're doing a thing. If I see you turn up with a binder full of laminated graphs I'll know you're serious

so fucking glad that it's all 'over' (with all the caveats that you're all aware of), really interested to see what the cultural fallout is going to be
