As a sort of offshoot of the 2000s worst decade ever thread I suppose. I'm fond of them even though they're undeniably lame and weedy

Rap, grime, dancehall, and nuum primarily ofc, but other stuff is welcome if it's good

UK funky producers used this sound a lot - everybody used to complain about it.

No surprise that Lil Silva was an unsuccessful young grime producer before he got his break in funky.

'midi' is a bit of a misnomer isn't it? It's really just whatever naff horn preset they've decided to use on the synth

I guess it implies that no thought has gone into the quality of the sound itself, they've just programmed a melody in midi and ran it through a factory preset

woops

is not like other people
not to turn this into another fall thread but i'd love to say that it's an example of the unruly genius of MES using whatever sound he can get his hands on and making it work but it doesn't work

UK Steppas have been blighted by midi / synth horns for decades

here's the tune that kicked off the trend in digital-dub in the late 80s

Dread & Fred - Warrior Stance

and now the sound has spread worldwide - here's one from Japan from 2017

Sak-I-Dub - Warrior Style

Yeah I associate this sound with the 80s and the 2000s, not really the 90s. The two most tasteless decades in pop music history, for better or worse
