if we want to look at the nostalgia aspect, its an insincere nostailgia. it knowingly re contextualizes all the ugly from the early oughts. im not sure theres been another nostalgia movement to take that approach

It's a node that connects several edges, mainly things that one can recall as hard cringe from the noughties-early tens era.
Zoomers on tik tok are not aware nor care what was held in contempt fifteen years ago and they are having the time of their lives rediscovering and carelessly throwing those outdated trends together, reclaiming and reconfiguring flag examples of cringe from fifteen years ago.
Here is a few of the mentioned lines, though I am certain there's plenty more to throw in there:
  • blingee.com
  • selfies from above (I recall when how weird it seemed to me, people holding the camera backwards above their faces)
  • edgy memes way past their due date, see: gangster popeye
  • random traits of the subculture that used to be called scene in the us, I think euros know it better as emo (stylistically distinct from the clean and smart midwest emo), see tokio hotel
  • unknowingly, a spin off early 2010s harajaku fashion, perhaps simplified, but with similar enthusiasm and sometimes naivete
  • metal shirts, too, somehow a lot of kids who were metalheads got into trap music a little bit later, I suppose the stylistic overlap between black metal and memphis rap has a lot of significance in this context
  • things that grew out of cloud rap and whatever bladee has been up to recently
  • calvin harris has been pardoned

We are quickly approaching the moment when it will be a cool thing to spin electro house at the opening of an exhibition.
I advise you refresh your memory of 2010s addicted to bass compilations.

nostalgia has been computer focussed for quite a while now eh tumblr was all about computer nostaliga but without the ugly thing. trying to get at the evocative aspects of digital spaces. i dont have any interest in it but simon reynolds son is making it his specialist subject i notice
