do you think what you describe as myspace chic overlaps with the aesthetic of balenciaga? i wanted to do a thread on it but didn't know how to formulate, what i noticed is that this brand got really omnipresent. from putting out exclusive variants of crocs to having collaborations with the simpsons and releasing binman or blue-collar jackets for thousands of dollars. lots of rap songs about it as well.

It gets mentioned in UK stuff too, AJ Tracey has a line about it in 'Thiago Silva';

Money that could put your girlfriend in a handbag
White tee, Balenciagas, man bag
Left-winger with a long stick like a granddad

Has Jet Set Radio made a comeback with Zoomers? Seems like something that could;

2918620-PALFrontccc-53973-full.jpg

DJ Professor K broadcasts the Jet Set Radio pirate radio station to gangs of youths who roam Tokyo-to, skating and spraying graffiti. One gang, the GGs, competes for turf with the all-female Love Shockers in the shopping districts of Shibuya-Cho, the cyborg Noise Tanks in the Benten entertainment district, and the kaiju-loving Poison Jam in the Kogane dockyard. The authorities, led by Captain Onishima, pursue the gangs with riot police and military armaments. After the GGs defeat Poison Jam, Noise Tanks, and Love Shockers in turf wars, they each drop a piece of a mysterious vinyl record. Professor K says that the mysterious vinyl has the power to summon a demon.

Who here had a MySpace? I was 14 just on the tail end I think, made an account but none of my peers were on it so never really used.
it was hardly a thing in Poland, we had our own local forum-based social network (which was great by the way, I wish I could dig up some content from there) and a myspace equivalent with all the html website creation and so on called epuls, apparently a lunarstorm clone.
I remember my cousin was really into it, but I used to take everything with microtransactions in it as a potential scam when I was in my early teenage years. I still do.

the nostalgia angle is worth looking into sure but I think we should avoid the temptation to make this a nostalgia thread. Im interested in how the style has become not solely a nostalgia movement and what that means

Most of the propagators (especially if you look on tiktok) are rather clueless, there is no nostalgia in there, rather approaching something that used to be the cream of cringe with a fresh (again clueless) perspective.
I suppose this could have been said about previous styles or subcultures, but this seems to really be everything before blended together. Looking at people who are into it seems more like navigating a space, rather than assigning specific traits to a specific group.
You can pretend to recognise the more scruffy youths from the more emo femboy youths, the true religion post-chief keef youths, the post-metalhead youths,
yes, but in reality they all overlap so heavily that they all exist within the same multidimensional space.

and not just the youth, but an older, high art crowd who are aware of the nostalgia element but empty it of that meaning like warhol

You can talk about nostalgia when you talk about some of the older musicians who brought this stuff back into the public eye, people like Grimes and OPN. The latter was getting into this territory when he did Garden of Delete and started pulling in the nu metal, cyberpunk and trash aesthetics;

JPEGmafia was who I had in mind with regards to early iterations of the style. Basically there but a little too knowing and cheeky to be exactly what Im getting at
