a term i invented last night for a style of music that existed during my teens. i just realised its amazing and not worthless shite as i had originally thought. a kind of bubblegum electro with trance and r&b elements infused. today i want as much of it as i can get. gimme gimme more

earliest and best example i can find. this probably invented the style:

other archetypal tunes:

I was just thinking Timberland may have preempted this with Maneater and My Love and completely forgot about SexyBack. You're right that's pretty definitive and came earlier in 2006

Good thread though- 'robo' is a descriptor that works for alot the music of that era. Akon, flo rida, iyaz, t pain, sean kingston just off the top of my head- early autotune like vocal manipulation but it doesnt have all the liquid wobbliness that gives its current users that human feel. And the preset synths too

by 2012 it was becoming more expansive and ravey, explicitly dance music. EDM
like this

compared to a cheryl cole tune from 2009 at the peak of the style. cuter and smaller in scope. this is what im after:

I feel like it's not a coincidence that the emergence of this sound coincided with the rise of social media, smartphones and the tipping point when the internet became ever-present. timbaland moving from guitar licks bongoes and tabla drums towards a tight fully electronic sound. a taste for futurism pushing itself back in to public consciousness as phones and screens became a constant presence. it was also the ringtone rap era

i realise that all may be well-trod ground on this forum but never thought about it in relation to this particular music

seeing my friend singing along to the chorus of this hungover after a party in brussels a few years ago and feeling filled with euphoria as a result was what made me realise i needed to give late 2000s pop music another chance
