things that were acceptable in 2012 that wouldn't be acceptable now

i just wanted a badger-baiting title to make a single point about nick cave.

specifically that this album artwork, from 2012. i reckon that nick cave has a reckoning coming at some point anyway, but for the time being the guardian and all the arty people still, as we would say at school, 'bum' him.

i've always thought he was a bit shite, especially the older stuff, and in particular, the most recent stuff. so in fact everything except the naked woman album above and the one after it. i listened to the naked woman one at night cycling around israel and a bit of palestine, it reminds me of sleeping outside on a roof in jerusalem, with a load of other people huddled up in sleeping bags, in the winter, lying there looking up at the sky at night with this on my headphones. highly recommended activity. it was very appropriate because all the songs on there are about walking down the street in brighton.

I still love the birthday party and nick was obviously a big part of that. first as feral child, then psychotic junkie poet, it was all rather thrilling at the time. and his early solo stuff was ok, as he morphed into playing the role of the young white Aussie as tortured blues singer. I stuck with him for a bit of the next stage, when he became sort of a morose Burt Bacharach, but got kind of bored and haven't really listened since "no more shall we part" in 2001.

no idea what his music is like today, although I do remember a few grinderman tracks being ok.

Yes, but I've never particularly liked his music or the fanbase around him. He seems to be one of the guys who's immune from criticism.
Having said that, I'd find it nice if he *doesn't* have a reckoning i.e. no shitty behaviour or year long cycles of abuse come out the closet. Would be nice for this to happen to one person, just for a change.

especially considering that on his blog he seems to reply to fans in a weird goth agony uncle fashion doling out advice on how to overcome the tragedies of broken hearts and being a goth

another question to explore is to what extent values have changed and to what extent its just fear of being scolded
