what's wrong with slowcore?

the trick got old FAST especially when at a certain point all the up and comers wanted to sound like either mogwai or godspeed, that's what killed it

Mogwai are peak channel 4 kitsche as well. Godspeed have that strength that there is a more ethereal core pulsating there, but Mogwai really single handedly killed the genre. Then you had people like Explosions in the Sky which just took Mogwai to even more saccharine extremes. They are musically one of the most unforgiveable bands ever created (even worse than Dream Theater!) but I'd still say if we take the whole ideological package Mogwai are one of the worst bands of all time.

Tortoise I don't mind for their moody minimalism but I think the last time I listened to them was 2016 one stoned night, which says everything really.

I like it. It avoids the pitfalls of alot of music that relies so heavily on mood/vibe by being so brazen with it. Its suffocating. Much less space for projection like with run of the mill indie.

i think there's a few ways to explain what it is that i get out of it. and i'm not saying that i like everything that's called slowcore. it's basically low, red house painters and codeine for me. first and foremost it is pretty often in line with my mood. second there is something about that slow sound which is spacious and exposes a lot of the grain in the vocal and guitar sounds. with guitars in particular by this point the only interesting thing that there is there for me is the huge amount of stuff you can do tonally. it is very much deconstructed rock music. third there is something about it which is quite negative, quite 'anti'.
Red House painters are a band I was interested in getting into at one point cos of that war on drugs go fuck yourself song which I thought was brilliant. But then I listened to a few more by him and thought I didn't need it.
