That's from Keith Johnstone's Impro

It's making the Ex Machina Pollock argument, in favor of letting our unconscious imps and goblins do our bidding as creatives

is he though? i think mining unconscious is still a part of the self-expression mythology, even a sort of revered shape of it

He's saying if you act as transmitter, then you can't be accused of making conscious choices

I think

Side note: the Tibetan herdsmen, if they are less self conscious (and that is a big if we are always in danger of projecting on the Other) it is because they live in a stable culture. They do not need to code switch. They can reify the rules of the game as eternal and non arbitrary

Yes, a transmitter. Very Cage-an also.

It's done unconsciously but not concerned with the actual unconscious of the artist as an object.

To put it another way, self-transparency is a social liability past certain points

(You become "self-conscious" )
“Knowledge kills action; action requires the veils of illusion” I think about that one a bit in terms of how most social interactions need to conceal to function smoothly, and how we need to deceive ourselves to go on

Gilles Peterson's word in the nineties was 'eclectic.'
yeah and that goes on to the wire having timbaland articles and all sorts as if to flaunt their open agenda and then that goes on to whichever internet site for ages now

It gets you out of responsibility for what you write
yeah it takes the pressure off. sometimes its necessary to use these tricks and dodges. i used to snip words and phrases out of newspapers etc and make sentences that way. not genuine cut ups but still a way to dodge responsibility

This is the most interesting thread on Dissensus in ages, please contribute people, do your homework, keep the hackysack in the air etc

Gnasher's thread ended up pretty interesting too but I'm speaking in terms of potential, the potential here is much higher, the territory explored more uncharted.

I though this thread was mainly about Luke’s anxiety over the algorithmatised archivist youth stealing his lived experience

"But this formal involvement - here is the decisive innovation - now aims at showing that every style is arbitrary and therefore irrelevant."
Why does arbitrary mean irrelevant here?
It's just that when you're choosing between these styles, there is little objective grounding to prefer one over the other
I think this partly answers it. The churn of switching between styles leaves you feeling empty

"An arbitrary convention, to be hegemonic, must put itself forward as the only possibility. To propose two or more conventions for the same 'object', on the contrary, is to invalidate them all and renounce all hegemonic pretensions. This is exactly what happens in Ulysses."
does this answer the question shiels? or not really?

Well you know I’m only 600 into Ulysses so I can’t answer with any authority

I don’t know. at this stage of understanding what it does I can visualise as some beautiful technical parody and impersonation and undermining thing, confounding and frustrating but I don’t know if any core message had reached me yet

Im not a proper scholar as yet and I suspect the real Enjoyment might come from proper scholars who can connect the dots and see the patterns of interference, reading in a less literal more literary way
