no, i just keep saying it on every thread. beyond soul is maybe the where i bang on about it the most? cant remember

It’s connected to the conversation that every thread is weaving around - performativity, the dress up box, the algorithmic self, authenticity etc ….and how internet communication incentivises melodrama and extremity while we mostly sit in isolation straight faced and stimulated in a prickly shallow way

yeah it’s a review condensed to the most emotive parts. For people who prefer to watch than read.
Wouldn't be surprised to learn that a lot of people follow sport via highlights and analysis alone and don't even watch the actual events anymore, partly due to the cost, partly due to the way media and attention spans have shifted.

this condension or highlight culture isn’t always a bad thing obviously eg a decent dj set is always better than the best dance music albums of all time. Artists sometime don’t know why they’re good Etc

But the frightening thing about the emojification of culture is that it eventually forces out ambiguity and exploration and nuance in favour of polarisation pile ons and populism

something that i was thinking about on the train in light of that thread from the other day, the one about glitchcore or whatever it was, is that the way that dissensus collectively pulls at the strands of music and culture, pulls it apart, tries to figure out what it all means, might be a bit of an old fashioned thing, or at least if you're interested in thinking through culture and what's going on, it's maybe unboxing videos, reaction videos, tiktok comedy, that's the cultural force equivalent of ardkore and so on nowadays. but we all think its shit so we're not going to bother.

it really isn't that long until there's a load of people whose formative musical experiences will have been learning tiktok dances to filthy US hiphop, which is such a different way of engaging compared to like hearing stuff on the radio or Now 38 or your older brother's metalheadz records or whatever

to be a proper shaka post you have to specify the train, eg the night train to Kabul, or the bullet train to Osaka, or the A-train to Harlem
