look forward to swanning about like I own the place, scattering dollar bills from my bulletproof limousine

Let's Talk About Ceps
All my cousins are kiwis and once they set up camp on your couch you can't get rid of them. It's horrible. Freeloading cunts.
We had an Australian once, in the last shared London house I lived in. And I say that deliberately in the same way you might say you had a rat, or cockroaches. Fucker just camped out in our living room for weeks, might even have been a whole month.

Of course, he was friends with, and a compatriot of, one of the people who legitimately lived there, so the rest of us just sort of grumbled but felt unable to suggest to her that her mate might like to think about fucking off after a stay of a reasonable, non-pisstaking duration.

I agree retail is done, which is why the question has arisen. And I don't think it's a huge cultural loss either (albeit people were sentimental about record shops) but it does pose the question of what happens to the space. The street is the foundation of democracy, there has to be that shared space that gives us a connection to what is happening to our country, we have to see all the representative types out and about in it, milling around, we have to see the state of the infrastructure etc
Some people think democracy itself is on the way out anyway, if we ever really had it.

It also seems like there may be something of a subtle power transfer from the citizen qua voter to the citizen qua consumer, as a unitary determinant of market activity.

But the consumer's power would largely be predicated on competition, and snuffed by monopoly. The power to choose between two different products that are owned by the same entity, i.e. boil down to the same interests, would seem to render consumer leverage all the more irrelevant.
