It's interesting, The Weeknd feels like he is top of the world right now, at peak powers, entering his own Michael Jackson-level era. But if you look at the playcount on Spotify, we're talking like 20-60mil plays, which is like Caroline Polachek territory.

OTOH, his top couple tracks have 1.5 bil plays so there's just a huge tail-off in terms of singles listening vs album listening, that's a scale of 100:1
all discuss the tunes except gus discuss stats

What do people make of the idea that the first listen is pretty "blind" and more of a "wearing in" of the album, that you can't know whether it's catchy, and can't distinguish between Just OK and Great until you've given it a few listens

My old school pal Derek and my live-in maid Nico both say that it's the 2nd listen for them. But me, I think it happens anywhere between listen 3-9, sometimes it can get into the teens before the song "clicks" for me and I like it

My friend Ben says that loving something is just a matter of learning to speak its language, see eg Stockholm syndrome—what do we make of that?

I can usually tell if something is worth listening to on first listen but sometimes it wont 'click' for a few listens ya

thats always been the weeknds issue. cant write songs. its funny that when he does manage to actually write a song its pretty good. some artists write plenty of songs but they never relate. with the weeknds its either a nothing or a pretty good song

alright well to go into more detail i can see why that kind of idea might appeal, convince etc but if youstand back and look at it it's a "misanthropic and reductive" (@luka) viewpoint, the idea that taste can basically be brainwashed into you, the equivalence of "entertainers"/artists with sadistic captors, i wouldn't want to look at it that way myself and apart from a flashy metaphor i don't see what's gained. there.
