Gabber: Square wave bludgeoning

i briefly talked about it with @thirdform in that glitchcore thread but i've never liked gabber one of those genres that's always left me cold and for a lack of a better word repelled by it

Bring up all your stories about encountering central euro weirdos who adore this music it's all worth it here, i won't be as rigid as other places

i mean even some of the acid stuff i've head where it goes into that kind of tempo the only thing seperating it is the fact that it's got this really frantic gnarly 303 in it and while that's something for me to grab onto its not enough to stop the tidal wave

always thought that it's brilliant for about 15 minutes. think its the sign of a good festival when there's a stage banging out some gabber at some point. the intensity is something else, and there are certain moments when it sounds like the best music in the world. but the big problem for me is that it only suits particular situations, and it is pretty wearing to listen to for very long.

There's also the fact that it's the genre i associate with either goth raves or dirty white guy drug addled filth, there's a joke i heard on an old rap podcast where one of the guys said drunk euros loved that awful Crookers version of Kid Cudi's day n nite cause it's got a four to the floor beat to make them think they can dance to it. This goes even further than that its only "dance" in the sense that its under than umbrella and other stuff came before it. but the most i've ever seen is people jumping up and down to it and out of nowhere a beach ball is there for some reason.

listening to a bunch of Traxx/Mick Wills/Jamal Moss made me realise that actually there is some EDM out there that i can like and its not just the gas mask bondage gear goth stuff that i find deeply embarassing but as mentioned before outside of the 2 tracks that third posted in his top 100 generally don't like the stuff

if those moments exist glad you've had them i'd be interested to know what festivals you've been to that play it

i grew up around people who played Rhythm games and i've always said that i would be into those games if any of the music was too my liking (would also be a great source of exercise too) but the music is just awful to me and on the harder more extreme songs some gabber would always pop up, so that's the other association that i have with it

somebody i know whose couple years younger brings up this guy Sleaze and how he was pivotal to bringing it to Germany, not only that but back in the 90s it was actually more multiracial before the neo nazi skinheads took over

the appeal for them with the music is that its rooted in "hey man, lets make something sick" making music that they think is cool and will go off in an illegal rave while off their face on fuck knows

stumbled across it at glastonbury, i think at some point there was a tiny stage that just played breakcore and gabba? don't think that lasted long though. seem to remember there was some at dour in belgium back in the day when i went there. its a minority pursuit obviously and actively hated by most people who hear it, which i can't help but think must be part of the appeal for people who like it as well.

that fuckin shuffle dem man do it says alot that for as intense as that music is the only "dance" they can do to it is some kickstep that wouldn't be out of place in a swing jazz routine

still less embarassing than "hardcore dancing"

Good documentary. Id love to go to one of these raves, think it would be really cathartic i think, but doubt I'd last very long.

The dance is shite but is it really worse than the drill dances?

@wild greens i'm just saying i would've expected with music like that for people to come with dances that are like daggering/lindy hop level level acrobatic

at least it would give me a break from sending me the same 3 videos of people daggarin with WWE commentry over it

Been to few teknivals (lol) with house rigs, Eastern France, Barca, a site near Prague. The problems were multiple and not restricted to sound

Drug choice of only one - ketamine, ketamine, ketnoming. Nihilism, def not life affirming. Passing out in your own piss. Then dog piss. Casualties. Doesn’t it get old? Wannabe Liberators, coalesced around Spiral Tribe’s uniforms too. What is that? Could it be less creative?

The playlist writes itself but fuck listening to it
