Tangerine Dream

2nd or 3rd UK lockdown ( I lost count tbh ) I bought the TD Pilots of Purple Twilight boxset, mainly because it promised the definitive release of the soundtrack to the Michael Mann film, "The Keep", but unfortunately what they included was the rubbish "re-imaginging" featuring some of the worst TD music ever ( I'm talking about the execrable track Puer Natus Est Nobis (Gloria), an abomination if I have ever heard one )

I've previously posted the good bootleg version in the Michael Mann thread, but to keep things tidy I'm going to stick it in here as well...

I have never seen, and have zero desire to see, the German porno flick that Klaus Schulze soundtracked ( somehow I imagine pale flabby flesh and copious moustaches, a hirsute lard fest ) but this is an amazing example of Berlin School synthesis

Klaus Schulze - Body Love ( full album )

edit: top left, check the classic 70s porno chair ( I once saw a documentary about this type of chair, youtube rip below, this style of wicker chair features on the covers of so many 1970s albums and I've been reliably informed that it was also a staple of 70s top shelf / under the counter publications ):

Why this chair is on so many album covers

this is another crosspost ( I originally posted it in the Most Underrated albums ever thread ) but this really deserves the attention of anyone who likes the Berlin School style of synthesis - original vinyl is still affordable, a totally slept on slab of kosmische - in desperate need of a reissue

Michael Hoenig - Departure From The Northern Wasteland (1978)

I'll rep this one hard, one of the best albums ever

and, yeah, he was in tangerine dream for a moment:

Tangerine Dream - London, Royal Albert Hall, 2nd April 1975

I could argue that the decline of Tangerine Dream coincided with the departure of Peter Baumann, the subsequent recruitment of Johannes Schmoellling, and the resultant dominance of Edgar Froese as captain of the ship, but equally the switch from unpredictable analogue to sterile FM synthesis also signalled the demise of a once great cosmic force... but they did have their odd moments in the 80s...

one such moment - admittedly while I was on LSD... I was sat in a pitch black room with one wall drilled through with equally spaced holes admitting the luminescence of a bare light bulb from the adjoining room...

Tangerine Dream - Tangram

pinpoints of light filtering through the penny sized holes in the wall, pulsing in perfect sync to the sequences, one of the greatest lightshows I have ever witnessed, thanks to the powerful magick of lysergic acid diethylamide coupled with the majesty of Tangerine Dream

the switch from analogue to FM synthesis resulted in the Berlin School churning out some right shite from 1980 onwards, but somehow Klaus Schulze redeemed himself with this masterpiece from 2007 that soundtracked my first few months of initial lockdown

Klaus Schulze - Kontinuum

Berlin konti 'nuum
i agree with what you're saying but i do like the soundtrack Schulze made for Angst which is a really intense movie if you haven't seen it

during the first lockdown I somehow saved some money and realised I could splash out on the the "In Search of Hades" boxset - some real "previously unreleased" gems included, like this from the Phraeda out-takes:

Tangerine Dream - 2nd Day

I'm too drunk at the moment to pontificate on the "berlin school" in general, but let's just say this style of music has soundtracked plenty of early morning sunrise acid trips

this Edgar Froese solo album is particularly good combined with LSD:

Edgar Froese - Epsilon In Malaysian Pale

there is a point where the sequencers kick in about the ten minute mark and light pulses all around the space you are occupying - bliss
oi you best find a way to send me some of that acid bredrin

Only problem I have with TD is the way that the seemingly infinite supply of albums clogs up every krautrock and electronic/ambient record bin from here to Berlin. I could really do with never flicking through bins and seeing another copy of Ricochet as long as I live.

Really like the first 4 albums but that's all I've really listened to. Someone - perhaps Julian Cope in Krautrock Sampler ? - said "it's not really music, more of a weather condition".

Do you know Elaine Radigue's stuff at all Version? Similar mental space in someways as those first few records.

Klaus Schulze I think under a pseudonym

There are two versions on YouTube at different speeds, I think it's cos it's confusing in that it's an album but it plays at 45 (I think).
