I'd disagree cos our friend Craner got no financial reward for taking the same stance and in fact basically nuked all his career and even social prospects by doing so

So it's a mistake it's possible to make on non cynical grounds. People are weird, and there are quite a lot of them, and they be'leive all sorts of strange things, quite fervently

Id be a bit more cynical about Hitchens, especially considering where he was in 2001. Washed up, alcoholic, probably pretty broke and facing into a retirement with no pension, with the only prospect of scraping cash together coming from occasional speeches, articles and introductions.

I think, like many, he saw an opportunity after 9/11 and went straight for the golden ring. I can see no other credible explanation as to how someone who wrote so insightfully on Kissinger and the sewer morality of America's imperial phase could cosy up to greasy mass murdering charlatans like Wolfowitz, Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld. He would simply have to unknow too much.
probably some of column A, Column B

with the rightward drift being A, the swallowing pride/revulsion/knowing better to back Cheney et al being B

have you/everyone else seen the infamous video of him getting waterboarded? an enduring 00s Iraq-era memory for me

obv extreme level of absurdity - the music! - but I'd love to have seen that piece of shit John Yoo or either of those hack psychologists the CIA contracted out to run their torture program do the same thing and then justify anything at all they were doing

not to sidetrack, but truly a deeply shameful moment in American history (I'm aware, there are plenty of them)

only made worse by two decades of 24, Zero Dark Thirty, etc not only glorifying torture but worse, rewriting history so that it was effective instead of a massive CIA bungle in every way from start to finish

Hannity said he'd be waterboarded to prove it wasn't torture too, but predictably never followed through.

Truly masculine, macho and hairy. Wonder how much pretending had to occur to warrant the all-caps emphasis.
