I think you're a bit younger than me Shaka? Otherwise you would remember that if you grew up in that area I reckon, one of those things where there must be a cut off date where you have to have been born before x to remember it.
yeah i think i am, my sister would be about your age though, and she definitely told me about this

Yeah... how did the rumour get started? Malicious or accidental?

"Oh shit... no no no I didn't say "desecrated" I said... oh it's too late..? Oops. Well that is very unfortunate."

i don't know if there was ever a full investigation done to establish the facts, which i think is what you would need to get to the bottom of it. i think it was probably something that someone said as part of a small dispute, that escalated by random chance. but there's a lot of this stuff about. a couple got stoned to death yesterday up in the mountains in badakhshan in afghanistan. i don't know the details but generally this stuff is the 'community' taking things into its own hands, nothing to do with the government. i used to do some media work over there and i'd read stories about people sleeping together outside of marriage who'd be chased down and killed by the people in their village. it's just shit all of this stuff. not that legal systems don't also do a lot of bad things but overall they are probably better than this kind of thing.

reminds me of what woebot, forum-father, said when he was telling me why he supported the Iraq war he said Luke, you've never been to the third world, let me tell you, it's fucking awful, it's squalid and violent and the people are ignorant. the only thing that stops us being in the dirt like them is the system of exploitation and repression we have in place. we have to do everything we can to support it. it struck me at the time as an unusualy clear-eyed and honest explanation and one that was very common though typically left unspoken.

This story's absolutely bonkers.

This woman made multiple false rape allegations against various men, particularly Asian men, and managed to turn her entire town upside down, bring in far right vigilante groups who started surveilling Asian businesses and smashing windows, and scammed 22 grand out of members of the public through a donation page.

The more you read, the crazier it gets. Apparently she had multiple phones with fake social media accounts which she used to corroborate her stories and the injuries she had were self-inflicted with a claw hammer she bought from Tesco.

The police sound pretty useless too. They kept this autistic bloke in jail for ten weeks before checking his alibi then found he couldn't have done what she said he did because he was photographed in the back of one of their own vans at the time as they were driving him home for being too drunk...

Mental. I reckon this will be a telly drama before long. Proper state of the nation stuff. Like Shannon Matthews a few years ago. I've been to Barrow, years ago now, but even then, it felt a bit forgotten. it's ages away from anywhere else.

I keep seeing news stories and thinking "When will they dramatise that?" - the person who wrote A Very British Scandal has another adaptation of an MP's life out now and I was idly wondering if they will ever do Jonathan Aitken.

It's suggested she lifted stuff from a film and a TV drama in the first place,

The prosecution accused her of confecting the Asian grooming gang after watching the BBC drama Three Girls, which told the true story of girls who were sexually exploited in Rochdale. They said she took the Amsterdam auction plot from the 2008 film Taken, in which Liam Neeson plays a father searching for the sex traffickers who abducted his daughter.

Fucking hell. And exactly what the genuine victims don't need, of course.

I actually just started watching the 3 girls series, as I've not seen it before. Really harrowing. Recommended, but has made me feel queasy.
