One of my favorite posts in this vein is Kontextmaschine's tumblr post after he started Lexapro
I liked the tweet that said if you and your mates all do some coke and you're like ok what's good about this then you probably are ADHD#
&/or adderall apparently

That's how I feel but I'm not sure I'm ADHD but I always wonder, my mother swears I'm high-functioning ADD and she's a child development professor, but I think they're made up diseases, nonsense acronyms

it started happening to me pre-covid. i often think my bad trip of a few years ago is what caused the coronavirus. it also led to, or at least directly preceded, unpleasant effects like this. i dont have it all the time but when i do i don't like it.

i was just thinking sometimes i wish i had a label to explain why the world treats me like im some sort of freak. ADHD would be ok. anything really. but as you say they're all made up.

Surprised I wasn't all over this thread but I think Feb 2022 I was having a mental breakdown.

I was just wondering about ADHD. A few ppl I know recently have been diagnosed with it or suspect they might have it or suspect I might have it.

Not sure i buy it but I must say i do like the idea of a miracle pill that makes me less lazy and shiftless

(Begs the question, in Dante's 'inferno', could you have avoided the eternal agonies of the slothful by popping a ritalin in life?)

the pandemic was no small event, by Jan 2 years ago millions of people were under acute stress and high cortisol levels have the effects of primo cognitive dissonance, look what cortisol does to the immune system as a comparison

give it time, ie allow yourself specific processing time re-establishing social contacts, talking to loved ones about time of life, creating and maintaining self-compassion

men frequently balk at the last element, self-compassion, yet without it (and by inference reaching out to GP’s etc) we can indirectly sabotage our own well-being

one aspect of the pandemic witnessed was people with hectic and busy social lives being cast adrift - what next etc - so maintain gallery visits and nights out with your crew of reprobates

a pre-pandemic factory reset is only practical if we acknowledge the acute toll and processes a once in a century event can unfold within the mind, and even then I couldn’t advocate this position fully as Covid is still with us

some days have a quality of a factory reset. you wake up and take a walk in the park and it feels like your dad might come out from behind a tree to give you a pair of skates and tell you that we're going to skating on the lake with your cousins
a killer boozy night where everything goes right does this for me. wake up and something has been shaken loose. the factory reset. they're a bit elusive though

Studies show dual n-back is as effective as the pills. So just do that.

you have to be sufficiently motivated to start a dual n-back program tho
true but struggling for 20 mins over d n-b in the morning to unlock eight hours of focus for studying or whatever is better than struggling for eight hours to unlock eight hours of focus

This sounds a bit like those studies about breakfast in the morning, just square this one thing away and you'll be set all day. As an avowed breakfast avoider I'm skeptical.
