The thing is calling Kwarteng a 'coconut' is hot air. It's not an analytically useful heuristic, although the British left love lobbing same insult at Priti.
The conversation that British leftists don't want to have however is that Kwarteng is a powellist, because they see Powell as an anachronist, even within the 60s new left era. They persistently fail to recognise that Powell was a thoroughly modern, (and insofar as this term has any analytical utility) he was Britain's first neoliberal, not Margaret Thatcher. in some ways, british black&brown communities have been ghettoised according to Powell's ghetto proposals for ex-colonials, though on a much bigger scale and with much less assimilation. But this is why nativism and racial particularism is still prominent in these communities, not to mention the returns to religion, victorian morality and bootstraps ideologies.
