Crazed visionaries are not necessarily cool kids, the latter tending to be quite popular.
@woops the way crazed visionaries end up becoming the cool kids is that they show off that they're into the same kind of cool above ground music as their fans with one or two deep cuts that they'll be surprised the know of and THEN once they're established they expose you to all the weird deep in the ocean weird shit that they like.

Jay Z, definitly Kanye if anything he's the originator of it and then you have like Danny brown and some of those guys, the generation after that your Tyler the creators, Asap rockys and what have you took it further by going further into branding especially because these brehs were bascially just fashion models and music was the springboard to them starting their "world conquering career" which they move into other fields like fashion, acting maaybe streaming on twitch or if you're really sucessful having your own music festival.

It helps with these guys if you swear that you listen to "weird" music like panic at the disco, Sarah Mclaclan, blink 182, stevie wonder that sort of thing

Thanks I get it now

but certain rappers making more accesible versions of microscene/regional sounds really isn't new nor is the other version where one rapper from that particular scene is cherrypicked to be the representitive of it.
E-40 is still the first rapper to comes to mind for people when they think of Bay Area rap and hyphy (despite tell me when to go being produced by Lil Jon and having none of the mania that the hyphy of the time sounded like), Twista and especially Common for the longest time were who people thought of when it came to Chicago rap.

If you've ever listened to Atmosphere, what Macklemore did when he was the white rapper of the moment was just the diet version of that i mean shit even Young Thug and Migos if you've heard Rich Kidz(jose guapo and skooly in particular),Travis Porter J-Futuristic and Ca$h Out you'd know exactly what those guys are building off of and some of these guys either because of crimes they did or because they didn't blow and tastes changed or were too ahead of the game as their fans like to say.

@shakahislop is especially frustraiting now because it goes to show just how social media and the internet have only reaffirmed a particular hiarachy of which rappers get talked about over which and because some of these people don't have a big co-sign or a collaboration from a rapper they know of they hold them in the same regard as youtube freestylers, so when i tell you this isn't new it REALLY isn't new
I've caused all sorts of confusion here by mixing rich kidz up with cool kids

You engage with music sociologically as well though. When we are talking about music none of us are talking of it in purely musicological terms, which would be unutterably dull. It's about where we want things to go, a kind of presentation, a passion. With barty, despite being the same age bracket as me and webbie, he's got very little sense of historical time. for him jungle, miles davis, migos all blur into one. Which in a way I admire but it's also not very systematic, and I like to be systematic. It's a different way to consrtructing a filing cabinet. You might do it by letter, or by style, or by artist. I tend to do it by years, groups of years, movements. In my head, that is. In a way barty's internet everything approach doesn't really have the same kind of mental mapping that I'm used to making in my head. Not to prioritise the superiority of one approach over another, but it's just the way it is.

Also, I can't speak for Crowley, but I am the cool kid. People will be agreeing me soon that romantic warrior by return to forever is a great album. I'm thinking way ahead.
and if i'm being honest and can get a little pretentious here you can look at it one of two ways 1) Barty's approach to music is much like how alot of people now in that while he likes all those things and is passionate about it it comes of more like a mood bored of different pet interests that he's into at THIS particular moment in time before he replaces one or two of them or just all of them entirely. none of it is really deeply entrenched in the way people were into things prior to facebook/twitter taking over as places of disscusion where you had specific fan sites and enthusiats and on forums each interest had its own desinated space to go deep into it

or 2) it's very reminiscent of 1.0 era internet when it was deemed a "wild west" where all oppertunities were available, could change your identity to however you see fit explore where you want delve how deep you want to go and me and third's are alot more rigid reflecting the feeling that alot of older people who've spent decades using the internet now feel that much of it is "closed off" and that they keep revisiting the same handfull of places over and over

also luka one other aspect as far as advocating for things is cause you find as a fan alot of the rappers you do like have a habit of collaborating with rappers that you don't

i've mentioned Zelooperz before but he's on the most recent Tony Shhnow album and before that he was on Earl Sweatshirt's album aand on the deluxe version of GUMBO and flysiifu aaaand on Tisakorean's mr.siLLYfLow(i'm not totally on bored with Tisa but his energy is infectuous) even on Tony Allen's last album and that Injury Reverse album that i know was a big deal for some people.

It comes off like some unknown force is trying to get me to like him and he STINKS, he's fucking awful

that doesn't resemble the barty i know at all

well i guess it seems to me he made a username referencing an artist and then half a decade later wrote a book about how important that artist is, you know? just feels really strange to characterize barty as someone whose allegiances/reference points change with the wind

that's why i said it could be either or, also i get it that it might seem strange but some people are like that even if it just within larger umbrellas of rap, rock, dance music whatever.

wasn't just strictly applying it to him

@shakahislop
(sharing this because check out all the cameos inna it)

not that the label itself is massivly important but if you took a little time to learn about Awful Records and all the kind of rappers who associated and intermingled around this particular kinda sound you'll see why i'm saying Carti isn't this singularly unique rapper

Lucki(then Lucki Ecks), Maxo Kream,Vince Staples,Da$H, Retch, Father

Vince being there is funny because both him and Carti's careers started from the same place but evolved in different ways (Vince being associated with Odd Future while Carti aswell as being affiliated with Awful was heavily around the A$AP Mob)

I'm light headed cause the inside of the venue was a fucking sweatbox but i saw Key Glock and it was bordering on solid, which i'll explain when i'm not so exhausted

but i'll bring up one thing, i met Novelist while i was there, bless guy

This was inspired by a surprising convo i had this weekend where somebody posed the "hot take" that maybe RZA was actually a bad producer which if you ask me is ridiculous

and his points of comparison were Q-Tip and DJ Premier

All three are top tier
They are although outside of 3 tracks off the top of my head Premier hasn't put out a great beat in quite a while

Basically all the things they took issue with is exactly the point of what made those early wu albums good (harmonies all over the place, stuff drops out and comes back, "amateurish" quality overall) like. ...come the fuck on man

@shakahislop remembered something you said about a really middle of the road Dababy song how one of the things that appealed to you was the "ugliness" of it give these 2 a listen and get back to me
i don't immediately see the connection. dababy is a particularly distilled version of a lot of the women-as-objects thing that is all over the places in the rap tunes i come across. and done in an accessible way, these two tunes aren't similar at all to me
