I once saw a picture of a member of Faust in a magazine or something, might have been him, playing what I think was a double necked bass looking like the ultimate hippy crusty of all time and it prejudiced me against them ever since. Can't find the picture now but it was horrendous, like a member of the ozric tentacles or something. They may well have some good tunes for all I know
They don't. They're the pits.

No one mentioned The Cosmic Jokers (I know we're meant to stick to the poll) but I liked them when I used to get high. It made me think Manuel Gottsching was a guitar god. Also prefer Ashra to Ash Ra Tempel.

Popol Vuh's most listenable to me are their Herzog soundtracks. Amon Duul II their best for me is the opening riffs of Lucifers Ghilom. Hard rock compared some of their earlier Hippy stuff like Love Is Peace.

The important thing about krautrock is that almost all of it is absolutely fucking awful. Faust, Neu, Cluster, Popol Vuh are outliers. If anyone tries to get you to listen to Xhol Caravan or some shit ignore them. Every other band in 1970s West Germany that's not on that list are dreadful

Guru Guru were one of the worst but had a decent drummer that as far as I'm aware still goes round bashing what do you call them... DIY pots and pan drum kits.

Also the figure behind a lot of records, Conny Plank, as far as I know was one of the first engineers to develop an XY controller on mixing desks by incorporating a joystick. Gives Neu records their swirling spacious sound. Though the last time I heard a Neu track was at the cinema waiting for Enter The Void to start playing.

If you have Harmonia AND Cluster AND Neu! then you should have La Dusseldorf . So what if it's eleven, who says a poll has to be an even number

the first song on the first La D album is as good as anything Neu! did I think, except maybe the first song on the first album

I think @bunnyhausen is taking the piss... or at the least being slightly disingenuous here, considering she ran a krautrock night for more than ten years... always an amazing dj playing the wildest kosmische sounds... used to blow my tiny mind every month without fail when I moved to London.

As for Niagara, I'm sure I've said this more than once before but I really love Klaus Weiss who was the drummer. I did a (very short-lived) night named after his Time Signals album

And I really love the tune Dirt Track which is something I've squeezed into any dj set possible whenever I can over the years

You didn't read the first post. Dissensus only lets you have ten options, (though i'm sure it used to more than that?)

I think I mentioned I like a lot of krautrock that is motorik, other than that I also like the sound that Can have on things such as Oh Yeah and Vitamin C which, for want of a better word, is basically a kind of funk. But I don't know much other krautrock stuff that genuinely achieves funkiness as Ca do - this one comes to mind but what else is properly loose like this?

The other day I got my mate to dj in a bar with me - he's never dj-d at all since he left Australia as far as I know so I was quite keen to see what he came out with. One thing I liked and immediately asked about turned out to be a reworking of a tune by Birth Control - apparently he had hesitated to play it cos he'd thought that I might know the original and be such a purist that I would tell him off for playing a re-edit. Not sure if that counts as a krautrock tune though cos I think he made it all but unrecognisable from the original.

I don't know the original though, the only one I know off the top of my head is Gamma Ray which is quite famous I suppose.
