Kaliyuga Express - Nightmare Visions (2023)

I am trying to listen to all the records I bought this year but haven’t played yet

Just got around to this one that actually arrived in the post ( it’s been unreliable) and it’s definitely inspired by “motorik” and Hawkwind

There is a lyric sheet included but I wish they hadn’t, it’s better if you are all “pardon, what did you say”

Edit: this is reasonably effective at capturing the sound of my youth, freezing in some field next to a stone circle while coming up on more than one tab of white lighting or purple om or whatever leftover operation Julie acid the peace convoy were selling at the time, while the sound of the band was blown around in the wind and some hippy shouted out “half a mix?” or “hot knives! Black and smack, only 80p! opiated black 60p! Black and coke, a pound!” And then a bucket would get passed around for donations to keep the “genny” running but some Hells Angel would snatch it out of your hands and wander off with his bounty ( true stories ) - this is all a continuation of a post I made regarding I Jahman Levi and the Androids of Mu and Stonehenge peoples free festival and I give it about 8 hours before I delete this just like the previous one I might have made

I'm still working my way through unplayed purchases from 2023, in fear that I'm amassing an "antirecordcollection"

Speck - Krautobahn, unbegrenzt ( 2023 )

contemporary Austrian motorik space rock

Speck - Raumgenerator

I'm drunk enough to throw this one in

Hawkwind - Damnation Alley ( original Rockfield Studio demo 1977 )

the album version lost the motorik beat and the free festival wind blowing over stone circle out of phase guitars vibe

I prefer this demo version, reminds me of tripping on a burial mound while hells angels strong arm the beer tent

I have to confess the teenage "I" actually read a couple of Roger Zelazny sci-fi novels on the strength of the over produced glossy album version

one of the best rock biographies "I" ever read was:

This Is Hawkwind Do Not Panic ( by "Mrs Brock" * )

which dispensed with all the boring "and then they recorded an album" nonsense and just consisted of multiple psychotic drug anecdotes

* at the next Great Northern dissensus meet-up ask me about "Mrs Brock" and felt tip pens....

I know less than nowt about these guys but I saw this tune shared in a fb group I'm in and happened to press play on it and give it a listen. What I heard was a playful little number that begins with a few silly beeps and then sort of meanders around for the first minute or so as if deciding what kind of tune it is going to be - and then with quiet determination, around the minute mark it settles on a sound, deciding that it wants to be a motorik tune.

The beats have always been there drifting purposelessly around and about but now they coalesce into a low-key motorik groove; not the wild pounding bashing kind, this goes in the other direction and locks into an effortless, endless floating rhythm that has its eyes fixed firmly on a point somewhere beyond the horizon, a point towards which it glides in a manner that is somehow light but at the same time suggests an inexorable relentless propulsive power with infinite unstoppable resources throbbing away beneath the sleek shiny outer coating that... or in other words it sounds like pretty much any other fifteen minute long second division krautjam.

Or let me just clarify that, I feel that motorik songs divide into two main groups, you got the bangers and the gliders.... ooh and arguably you've got those itchy funk ones do you know what I mean?

I think these are the main motorik categories if anyone is interested to go this far; obviously they all have the same sort of beat but some glide and float ,(Simple Headphone Mind, Hallogallo) some bang and bash (Hero, Valium 10) and some jerk and nag (er Mono by Beak springs to mind but there are more I'm sure). It's not to do with the tempo especially cos you can get each type at various tempos.

But does that split makes sense? I've only just written it down and actually properly explicitly thought it but I think it's alwayd been in the bs j of my mind as the intuitive way to do it? Does anyone agree or disagree or care even slightly?

Anyway, I'm just putting that to clarify my above review. I'm saying that it of type A the gliding kind and it is a nice enough tune but not a stone-cold grab-you-by-the-bollocks-and-yank-you-to-your-feet master-blasting undeniable killer monster mofo ie second division. Type A, class 2 for future reference.
