Pandemic missed opportunities

I thought that a species level threat might just jar us into more conscious existence, but it has not.

Or at least some good jokes about "Bring out your dead" and people wandering about in plague mask cosplay, painting symbols on doors etc
. Instead we had that NHS clapping for a bit, and rainbows ... so drippy. this could have been a big gothic panto

One of the nice things about the pandemic was that for a while it was possible to believe that rent would get cheaper, with all the possibilities that would open up. It didn't pan out that way, stuff was temporarily cheap, but now it's back to normal
& like what shaka say... what a fuckup

woops

is not like other people

i think it's more or less two years to the day that nyc shut down. have a lot of Thoughts on the pandemic and how its going to pan out long-term. opportunities missed for sure. but also, it's about time for the post-mortem of what will probably be the acute phase of the pandemic. think that of course we will now start to see the long-term consequences, which we can mostly only speculate about at this point. the most obvious one to me is that the office work thing is an altered beast. which doesn't affect everyone for sure, coz a lot of people don't have jobs like that. but if you have a livelihood that's mostly about sitting on a computer the old way of life is over. the only interesting thing i have to say about that is: well, we are heading towards a world where a lot of the middle-class, who tend to work in offices overall, have fundamentally atomised lifestyles. that's a pretty powerful group of people like it or not and the removal of these people from workplace obligations creates a different social world for such a powerful demographic.

genuinely think that for people in the west the pandemic is going to be a hard stop at the end of the previous period and the beginning of something a bit different. i don't think things have gone back to normal and i don't think they're ever going to. a whole load of stuff is on the table now that wasn't before, and people have a really enlarged sense of possibility, i think everyone understands impossible and in particular impossibly bad things can happen.

I was never really under the impression this was close to a species level threat though. Certainly it was a global threat that impacted virtually everyone, many quite tragically. I think we'd have a tough time going extinct even if we tried.
