Dissensus isn't dead, it just deserves to die

I like how dissensus lightened up in the last couple of years or something tbh. I hate all these type of handwringing threads, it never goes anywhere anyway and just causes upset (especially when aimed at individual posters).

I remember a few years ago when dissensus was at a very low point I had similar feelings that it should just die, but that was probably cos I was in a bad, uptight phase myself and the board had lost any sense of fun for me. Things are a lot better nowadays, even though it naturally goes through slow periods. No point trying to control it I don't think.

And in defense of the bullying- that everyone here can say horrendous things to each other and still go on civilly is maybe the boards best feature in that one its hilarious and two it allows for a wide bredth of opinion. Theres a fine line of course but its not something that can ever be enforced with any sort of rule or code of conduct
I agree there is a Masculine Socialization Norm around here that used to be everywhere/a core part of male homosociality but today has vanished... V important we preserve this cultural mode as it is presently under threat of extinction

That said I think we can ease people into it, it is a soft-skinned culture, we can't expect people to stumble in randomly thick-skinned already, we need to build them up via conditioning

My twelve step plan for saving the forum:

1. Convince Barty to return
2. Convince Beiser to return
3. In-person recruiting at the Verso loft
4. My friend Gianni Luigi joins, everyone welcomes him
5. Every Dissensus user has to recruit one person under 30 to join, or they are temporarily banned until they do
6. Kieran quits lurking and pulls his weight... no free lunches Kieran!!
7. Woops's novel becomes an underground hit, and his preface (dedicated to Suspended and the Dissensus board) lures more registrations
8. Lots of young people now, and Americans
9. Forum renaissance
10. Posts flow like wine
11. Forum golden age, forum renaissance
12. Profit with Dissensus merch and NFTs, reinvest the funds in crypto, we're all rich
all good til point 12.

One thing I think would invigorate the forum is if everyone with a job pitches in, pays for a plane fight and car rental/gas for Ed and Luka, and they do a Baudrillard visiting America type travelogue for our amusement, each day new content, critiques of American gas stations, ruminations on the landscape. They can hit such important American landmarks as Breezewood Pennsylvania, Slab City, and the Cabazon Dinosaurs
before mos dan spread his wings and flew away to lrb and the grauniad

Can you be socialized into a culture leader though?

Benny i'm not hand wrining i haven't got anything to wring i'm just being upfron about how i'm feeling with whats been going on including right now

yes more often than not these things don't go anywhere cause people just go back to what it is they were doing before but if somebody don't say in then who will?, despite the jokes and the bully i do think there's still some people here who don't like to make anything "awkward" even if the issue is starting directly in front of em

thick skinned/thin skinned is a bullshit dichotomy and its often talked about like say somebody chooses be that and not how considering what kind of environment they were brought up in whether its something they adhere to or they're trying to push against that.

granted yes there are people out there who do use say the touchy feely language of therapy as a weapon against others or use it to cast broad stroke on certain man to say "you're opinion doesn't matter"

also if culture is really soft-skinned" then explain how my lot and people younger have lived through however many historical events and the ever present hum of war for the last 20+ years?

Suspended stayed at mine on his way over to nyc and we were talking about dissensus in front of her so I had no choice really. She asked to see a thread.

They haven't

Unless you've been living in like, Afghanistan? Swathes of Africa?

The West is at the end of a Decadent period now, nothing historical has happened since 1991.

Cmon Web step up your literacy game, I literally said "it's a thin-skinned culture" i.e. the environment alters people's setpoint so we should go easy on em.

I'm right here! Quit arguing against a figment of your imagination and talk to me brother!

She browses over his shoulder constantly. If you write to Linebaugh or if he comes into a thread, you should just assume a girl is seeing it, so be very polite watch your sense of humor we have a lady on the board
