To, in effect, play a determining role in the qualia taken on by your conscious experience, to practice magic in the Fortunian sense, to apply a second-order pragmatism.

It's weird, the prose is so condensed and quick that you actually have to deliberately slow down your own reading pace to keep up with it.

one of the obstacles Gus has to overcome is that he is a total weirdo no human can relate to. but on the other hand that's sort of interesting.

Tell us more about Fortunian magic @Clinamenic
Just that definition of magic attributed to Dion Fortune, something like: magic is the determining of conscious experience according to the will. So a sort of manual rewiring either of A) one’s own psyche, or B) an inter-psychic exchange (IE determining someone else’s conscious experience).

I like this definition because it’s strangely secular for the kind of esoterica Fortune was associated with. She was a contemporary and a follower of Crowley, I believe. This understanding of psychic influence, either over oneself or over others, I think is perhaps even more useful if you strip away the esoteric connotations and just try to understand it in terms of, I guess, phenomenology in the philosophic sense, and hermeneutics. That is, analyzing the experience of sending and receiving messages - influencing and being influenced.
