uk comedy is in a nadir

yeah the writers decided to bring in some bullshit storyline about how Ray J's character was the dad's hidden son and against the cast begging them not to go along with ti they did
it wasn't even that, although it was wretched in itself. It was when the show abandoned all pretence of being realistic, replacing the biting-but-loving barbs between the characters with physical comedy, a Halloween episode which was particularly arduous to endure

For one glorious year when I was a kid we had Sky because my dad wanted to watch football. That meant we had nickelodeon with all of these Black sitcoms on. My sister loved them. I didn't. I remember not really getting the comedy. Keenan and Kel in particular I remember thinking was a bit stupid. I can still remember the music to Sister Sister.

I used to watch Keenan and Kel. The only thing I can really remember about it though is Kel's orange soda. They used to have C-Bear and Jamal on some channel too.

Funny enough, subtitled an episode of Desmond's the other day for work, brought back some fond memories, hadn't seen it since the first time round.. No idea why you'd expect version to have seen it/heard of it though 🤣

because again as i said i think his response to it will be very interesting and if its what you and i are thinking it explains at least partially why he's got the total inverse feeling of what a nationalist feels about his homeland

@Benny B can't lie there's something insulting about the fact that Desmond's needed subtitling but i'm sure that depends on what your job is

the realisation that all even now people don't understand Jamaican patois is baffling to me as in actually needing subtitles like they're watching Three Colours Blue

Fair enough, my bad.

Desmond's was probably one of the best shows of that era looking back. I do loads of 80s/90s sitcoms I haven't seen since I was a kid, and very very few of them have aged well at all. Probably just as much shite as there is nowadays tbh

I did an episode of a rerun of little britain recently where I had access to the original script so I could see what they'd edited out for nowadays - the only thing they'd cut for today's viewers was some dodgy racist thing about the chinese interestingly, but they left some equally objectionable racist stuff.

References to 'poofs' get edited out of old episodes of EastEnders I've noticed too.

I only saw Lover's Rock and absolutely loved it. Saw some people who were involved in Blues parties at that time complaining about it being inaccurate but whatever the case may be it really powerfully evoked that sense of a house party and a night out that ends past dawn.

Girlfriends is astonishing, what if Sex And The City but it's all black women, and instead of being fashionable and enviable they're all shrill and bitchy and unlikeable, and what if even though the show is about women and sisterhood we still insist on having a fucking man in the opening cast credits?

(I don't even like SATC)
soo not a fan?
